The Peacemakers
“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God."
(Matthew 5:9 KJV)

My heart sank as so many emotions overcame me all at once. I remember Kennedy, King, Reagan, Lennon, peacemakers all, and all sadly the target of evil. In some way, it seems that bullet grazed the ear of all of us; the shocking truth of what we have become. In His glorious wisdom and in His perfect will, God spared this leader in such a miraculous way. Sadly, one was taken as he protected his family.

I have a more hopeful image now of what our precious land will be. We are in a frightening and grim decay. But I envision a painting of the degeneration being swept away, and our country being raised to glory. We must pray for the peacemakers, and for our nation every day.

My devotionals are primarily centered around the beauty of this world, the great creation of God that we are allowed to reside in. And in the peaceful existence that we are promised if only in our hearts and minds. In the morning time, seeing the amazing world that is before us, and meditating with our Lord, we thank Him for the gift of life and for another day. Let’s keep our focus on the things of God and not on the goings on of the world that poison the soul.

“But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.” (Psalm 37:11 ESV)

Prayer for the day.
Lord, we pray for the peacemakers. We pray for the healing of our land. We praise You. Amen.

A Psalm for Sunday

A Psalm of David.

23 The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
3 He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
Forever. (Psalm 23 NKJV)

Lord, You are our shepherd and we declare Your majesty.

It's Not Just a Rock

He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he. (Deuteronomy 32:4 KJV)

What can we learn from rocks? From the deep seas to the faraway craters of our moon, rocks are ever present.

The smooth softness of the rocks in a mountain stream and the tranquility they bring with the unending voice of flowing water. The towering rocks of a mountain face that leave us dwarfed in its presence. And the breathtaking canyons of rock with their layers of history. To contemplate this beauty is to contemplate God.

Rocks have been giant killers and they have been fashioned into weapons of war and throughout history rocks have been used as beautiful adornments.

In the Bible rocks are a symbol of strength and stability, of unwavering commitment, and a sign of our salvation; our confession of faith, the premise on which Jesus declared He would build His church.

Lord, for now and forever You are the rock of our salvation.

Freedom

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
(2 Corinthians 3:17 ESV)

I like to enjoy this day without thinking about all the distractions that beset us. We are truly blessed to live in a country where we can attend church and worship without fear of persecution by the government or any group. We can enjoy the beautiful gift of this world that God created.
I wish you a blessed and safe Independence Day.

God bless you and God bless this great country.

Lord, Your Spirit is forever with us, and we are free. Amen.

Watermelon Sunday

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people whom he has chosen as his heritage! (Psalm 33:12 ESV)

What a great day in the Lord! The church celebrated ten years at this location (and debt-free). We unapologetically celebrated the independence of the United States of America and gratefully recognized all who served in every branch of the military. We sang patriotic songs while every one of us waved our American flag. We sang great songs of the church, and we sang them joyfully.

Later in the day, we were blessed with the southern gospel music of Call to Worship, followed by dinner on the grounds topped off with cold watermelon. There is something very uniting about sharing watermelon, perhaps a nostalgic remembrance of family.

God bless you and God bless this great country.

Lord, thank You for this nation and for the freedoms we enjoy; especially the freedom to worship You without fear.

Refining Fire

And when he was in affliction, he besought the Lord his God, and humbled himself . . .
—2 Chronicles 33:12

Why do Christians suffer? Rest assured that there is a reason for Christian people being afflicted. One reason why God’s people suffer, according to the Bible, is that it is a disciplinary, chastening, and molding process. From the Scriptures we learn that the chastening of affliction is a step in the process of our full and complete development. Affliction can also be a means of refining and of purification. Many a life has come forth from the furnace of affliction more beautiful and more useful than before.

Lord, whatever I have to face, through it let me learn more of Your love and compassion.

Today

This is the day the Lord has made;
We will rejoice and be glad in it.
(Psalm 118:24 NKJV)

At first light, all is quiet. Our meditations are clear in the stillness as we begin a new day. Embrace all that is beautiful in your world that the Lord has given you.

“Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.” (Psalm 118:1)

His mercy is forever.
Rejoice in this day knowing that God loves you.

Lord, we put our trust in You. Thank you for this day.

The Trees We Plant

So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.
(I Corinthians 3:7 NIV)

At nine years old, whatever I did with my dad was a big deal. By far, the most memorable event was the day we planted an oak tree in our yard just beyond the house. I remember it was skinny and not much taller than me. We stood side by side and gazed at what was now in God’s hands. This is a memory that has been ongoing since that day; the tree lives still and is a symbol of the love of a father and son. This story is more than about a tree. This is God’s work in progress. We can plant and we can water but God grew this tree. It is His glory.

Little did we know I would see this tree photographed from space. Center, in the picture.
