PRAY OVER THIS

“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

(John 4:24)

PONDER THIS

There is something significant about our coming together to worship. The significance of coming to church is not primarily that we bring ourselves to worship but that we bring our worship to church. We have been with the Lord all week long. When we come together—all of us full of God—we don’t come here to get filled up; we’re already full of God. We come to celebrate together.

What are you saying about your life when you come to church to worship? You’re saying, “God is important to me,” and you’re saying, “God’s people are important to me.” That’s why we do not forsake “the assembling of ourselves together” (Hebrews 10:25), but we exhort one another. We encourage each other with the sermon, songs, and every piece of our gathering.

This worship continues through the rest of your week. Every day is a holy day, and every ground is sacred ground. But we still assemble as brothers and sisters in Christ, bringing our worship to the Lord and encouraging one another.

How are you “filling up” in your relationship with Christ during the week?
What value have you seen in corporate worship?
PRACTICE THIS

Encourage your pastor or other leaders in your church; thank them for how they serve others as they worship.

PRAY OVER THIS

“For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.”

(Colossians 1:16)

PONDER THIS

What did God make a fish to do? Swim in the sea. What did God make a bird to do? Fly in the sky. If you take a fish out of the sea and put him in a tree, he’ll be an unhappy fish. If you take a bird out of the sky and put him in the sea, he’ll be an unhappy bird. Both are out of their elements.

What is the element you were created for? God Himself. Until you know Him, you will be like a fish in a tree or a bird in the sea. You’ll be out of your element.

A little girl misquoted the twenty-third Psalm, but I believe she had it just right when she said, “The Lord is my Shepherd; I’ve got all I want.” That is the secret of satisfaction. It is Jehovah Himself. “The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1). In Him, in the Shepherd, are the wellsprings of my heart’s desire and purpose.

Have you ever wrestled with the purpose of your life? What was that like?
How does knowing that your purpose is Christ Himself change how you live daily?
PRACTICE THIS

Encourage a friend today in his or her purpose for God’s glory.

PRAY OVER THIS

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

(James 1:5)

PONDER THIS

Do you know what wisdom is? Wisdom is seeing life from God’s point of view. When you pray and you have the Spirit of God and the Word of God in you, you will begin to have wisdom. Knowledge comes by looking around, but wisdom comes by looking up. God will lead you and give you wisdom. When a person is walking in the Spirit, he can say, “I have the mind of Christ.” He’s not afraid to trust what the Spirit says. That is not natural; it is supernatural.

Wisdom is not a feeling like getting teary-eyed and warm around the heart. It is having a mind that is fixed on God, full of the Word of God, and led by the Spirit of God. The Bible says God will guide you with wisdom.

How have you measured wisdom in the past?
What does it look like to seek God’s wisdom? How can you do that today?
PRACTICE THIS

Share with someone the value of godly wisdom.

PRAY OVER THIS

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”

(Romans 8:28)

PONDER THIS

Martin Luther was the mighty reformer. He led the Protestant Reformation and was a man of great faith. But Martin Luther, like some of us, was given to fits of despondency and depression. One day, Martin Luther, despite his great faith, became depressed. He got his eyes on the circumstances and the situation rather than on God. And there in his room, he was brooding. There in his room, he was in a state of melancholy. He was looking at his circumstances and the situation, and he wouldn’t come out. His wife’s name was Katharina. She tried to coax him out of the room, but he wouldn’t move.

So, one day she put on a black dress. She put on a black hat. She put a black veil over her face. She put black gloves on and came into that room. She was dressed for a funeral. He looked at her and asked, “Who has died?” She said, “Martin, haven’t you heard? God is dead.” He said, “That’s blasphemy!” She replied, “Yes. And it’s blasphemy for you to be living like He’s dead.”

In response to this experience, Luther wrote the well-known hymn, “A Mighty Fortress.” Some of the words include, “A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; our helper he, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing.” The hymn goes on to say, “Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing; were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing.” That man is Jesus. And we know all things work together for good, and God is the cause of it.

What kinds of things tempt you to take your focus off Jesus and put them on the world around you?
How do you typically respond in these situations?
PRACTICE THIS

Look up the hymn “A Mighty Fortress” today and listen to it two or three times, seeking to meditate on the truth of God’s good purposes in our lives.

PRAY OVER THIS

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

(Ephesians 6:12)

PONDER THIS

Is there anybody who would deny that these are evil days? We’re up against the organized, mobilized, and demonized forces of Hell—and those forces come at us in every way. Sometimes it’s a direct attack. Sometimes it is very subtle. There is a war, but there also has never been a greater day, a greater age, and a greater opportunity to preach the Gospel of Jesus. There is more hunger for the Gospel now than ever before. There is more openness to the Gospel than ever before. You say, “Pastor Rogers, I thought you said things were getting bad?” They are. As the night grows darker, the saints grow brighter. The hungers are also more intense. There are people who are looking, waiting, and wondering, “Can we find a way? Is there an answer?” And there is an answer. The answer is Christ. But we need a generation of Spirit-filled people.

How does awareness of our spiritual battle better prepare us to fight it?
Who do you know who is struggling and looking for answers today?
PRACTICE THIS

Initiate a connection or conversation with the person who came to mind who might be struggling with answers today. Take opportunities to share the hope of Jesus.

PRAY OVER THIS

“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

(John 4:24)

PONDER THIS

Have you ever thought about what the Bible commands you to do? How are you going to do what the Bible commands? You don’t have the strength to do it. For example, Ephesians 5:19-20 says, “speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” But the reality is, none of us will live like this in our own strength. In our worship lives, we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Why? Because God is Spirit and they who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.

Have you ever been in a worship service where people are trying to worship God in the flesh? It’s just some kind of a circus, and it’s a program. How tedious and how tasteless that is. But you’ve also been in worship services where those who are leading the worship are filled with God’s blessed Holy Spirit, and the people are singing praises to God, and they’re worshiping God in spirit and in truth. The only way you can truly worship God is to worship Him in the power of His Spirit.

How would you describe the difference between worshiping God in the power of the Holy Spirit and in your own power?
Reflect on different experiences you’ve had with both of these.
PRACTICE THIS

Take a walk outside today, asking God to fill you with His Spirit and to lead you to worship Him as you observe creation all around you.

PRAY OVER THIS

“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”

(Romans 8:37)

PONDER THIS

I used to play football. My team would work and practice and hit and do all these things to take a bag full of zipped-up air across a pasture and over a white line on that field. It actually sounds kind of dumb when you think about it. But when you finally get that piece of pigskin over that white line, they call it a touchdown, and everybody goes bananas. That’s the goal, but there’s a group of fellows on the other side that says, “You’re not going to do that.” That’s what the game’s all about.

But let’s say I have figured out a secret to victory. We need to come out on the field at about 2:00 a.m. when the other team is not there. And then we can take that ball and shove it over that white line as many times as we want. Right? Well yes, theoretically. We could do that, but why don’t people do that? Because that’s no victory. If there’s no opposition, there’s no victory. God has not called you to a life of ease, but He has called you to a life of victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Thanks be unto God who causes us always to triumph in the Lord Jesus Christ.

How does today’s illustration help you understand what it means to have victory in Jesus?
Who or what is the opposition you face each day as a follower of Jesus?
PRACTICE THIS

Journal about the opposition you are currently facing in your walk with Jesus. Pray over these thoughts and thank God for the promised victory in Jesus.

PRAY OVER THIS

“For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.”

(Hebrews 10:14)

PONDER THIS

I want to give you a challenge. Find anywhere in the Bible where anybody was ever saved twice. You can’t do it. Do you know why? It’s impossible to be saved twice. Nowhere in the Bible will you ever find someone who was saved twice. Some people believe you can get saved and lose your salvation. They believe you must be born again and again and again and again. They believe you keep on getting saved. But as today’s verse reminds us: by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. Did you know for you to be saved twice Jesus would have to die twice? When you were saved, you received a ticket marked good for one salvation. You are perfected forever. Jesus is never going back to that cross. He’s never going to die again. By one offering we’re perfected forever.

What kinds of things cause you to question the validity of your salvation?
What might give you further assurance of your salvation? What might indicate that you’ve never been saved?
PRACTICE THIS

Spend time looking up passages that speak of the once-for-all assurance of salvation. If you have doubts about your salvation, ask God to reveal the truth to you based on His Word.

PRAY OVER THIS

“Therefore wash yourself and anoint yourself, put on your best garment and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking.”

(Ruth 3:3)

PONDER THIS

Christianity is not a code, it is not a cause, it is not a creed, it is not conduct, it is not church; it’s Christ. The mark of a Christian is a love for the Lord Jesus Christ. And the true desire of every child of God is to know Jesus Christ intimately. We want more than redemption; we want a relationship. We want more than the gifts; we want the Giver. We want Jesus Christ to be real to us.

You can know about somebody without knowing somebody. I want to know Jesus, not merely know about Him, don’t you? I want Jesus to be more real to me than any person I see face to face. The Apostle Paul said in Philippians 3:10, “That I may know Him.” In today’s passage, Naomi instructed Ruth on how to know Boaz, and Ruth followed her direction. God has told us how to know His Son, Jesus, through His Word. Will we follow?

How would you describe what it means to know Jesus? What do you base this on?
How might you seek to know Jesus more today?
PRACTICE THIS

Commit today to read God’s Word faithfully so that you may know Him better.

PRAY OVER THIS

“And saying, ‘Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.’”

(2 Peter 3:4)

PONDER THIS

How do I know Jesus is coming again? Because I believe the Bible. The Bible has shown itself to be the Word of God, and repeatedly the Bible mentions the Second Coming of Jesus. Now the new birth is important, but a new birth is mentioned only nine times in the Bible. Baptism is important, but it’s only mentioned 20 times in the Bible. Repentance is wonderfully important—it is only mentioned 70 times in the New Testament. But the Second Coming of Jesus Christ is mentioned 380 times in the New Testament alone. In our passage, Peter said that some will ask, “Where is the promise of his coming?” It’s all over the Bible. He has promised, and He cannot lie. If you take the whole Bible, one out of every twenty-five verses speak of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Jesus has said He will return, and He won’t break that promise.

How often would you say you think about the return of Jesus compared with the amount of space the Bible gives to this truth?
What could you do to remember this truth more frequently?
PRACTICE THIS

Look up some of the passages that refer to Jesus’ return. Work to memorize one or two of these as a way of regularly reminding yourself.

PRAY OVER THIS

“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”

(Hebrews 12:1)

PONDER THIS

One of these days we’re going to cross the finish line. In fifty years, many of us will not be alive; even after twenty-five years a great number will be gone; and even next year, by God’s mercies, some will have already gone on. We will have come to the end of the line. We don’t know when that’s going to be.

You may be a teen, but you might be at the very end of your course. One of these days, I’m going to breathe my last breath, but I’m not going to stop running—God helping me—until I do. I don’t want to stroll over the finish line. I want to hit the finish line with a blaze of energy and power, going for the Lord Jesus Christ. You may say, “Well, you’ll be an old coot.” It makes no difference. “Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day” (2 Corinthians 4:16). That’s the reason you ought to be an athlete—no matter what your physical condition or your economic condition. You are in a race, and that race is not over until you bow your head like the Lord Jesus and say, “It is finished. It is done.” Don’t give up before you get there.

How do passages like this one help give perspective to everyday life?
Where are you tempted to stop running the race God has given you?
PRACTICE THIS

Take time in prayer today to renew your commitment to running the race God has set before you. Ask Him to empower you with the strength to endure to the end.
