West Richmond Church of the Brethren To learn more about us, email the church at [email protected]

We take our name from a New Testament word “Brethren,” a word that describes communities of men, women, and children given over to living in Jesus’ way of compassion. The Church of the Brethren began out of German Pietism in 1708, with the desire of reformers to more fully follow the teachings and example of Jesus. We subscribe to no formal creed or rules, but see the New Testament as our guide to faith and practice. We affirm many basic beliefs of other major denominations as we seek to encourage partnership with Christians and persons of good will through local, state, national and world religious councils.

Come and see.

Come through our doors.
Come worship with us.
Come experience our community.

But what about the people who aren't looking for a church—and may never walk through those doors?

This Sunday we explore radical hospitality and a second invitation:
Go and do.

What does it mean for a church to be hospitable?

A friendly greeting?
An open door?
Making sure a visitor feels welcome?

Those things matter.

But what if hospitality also means going outside our doors to meet people where they already are?

This Sunday we begin a new series, Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations, with the message:
“Come and See” and “Go and Do”

We'll explore the first practice—radical hospitality—and what it might mean to move beyond simply inviting people to come to us.

There's an old story about a visitor who sat through a Quaker worship gathering and afterward asked:
“When does the service begin?”

The answer?
“Brother, the service begins when you go out the door.”

Why do we call it a worship service?

Maybe that word service matters.

This Sunday, guest speaker David Brunk asks us to think about worship as more than something we attend, consume, or receive.

Worship can be an offering of ourselves—through friendliness, sensitivity to others, different forms of expression, music, and the service that continues after we leave.

A familiar Scripture.
A different way of experiencing it.

This Sunday there will be no traditional sermon. Instead, our worship will include an interaction with Matthew 13:1–9 and an illumination of Sower and the Seed from The Saint John's Bible.

Sometimes slowing down to see as well as hear can invite us to notice something we hadn't noticed before.
