We’re back up in action taking donations and telling the stories of our loved ones today. It’s absolutely beautiful right now. Good temp, beautiful sunshine, birds chirpin, an occasional cow mooing, and a gentle breeze waving the flags. Did you know we have 16 brave veterans buried on these hallow grounds. None of them died in battle but the bravery shown by them isn’t any less important. With the world going crazy right now it’s even more important to teach our children about our freedom and rights and how brave men and women have protected them.

“I thank God for my life
And for the stars and stripes
May freedom forever fly, let it ring
Salute the ones who died
The ones that give their lives
So we don't have to sacrifice
All the things we love” - Zac Brown Band

Decoration Day, Memorial Day, Remembrance Day, whichever name you prefer. This weekend we remember those who came before us. Whether they died in our lifetime or 100 years or more before you’re born… we remember. We started off our Memorial Day weekend with adorning all 149 permanent residents with flowers. Thank you Katie and Robert for your donations of flowers. They look beautiful! Also adorning our 16 veterans with flags. I firmly believe that once your name is no longer said aloud is only when your truely forgotten. It seems like “decorating” the graves is a dying tradition - no pun intended. Even with the cloudy weather this weekend grab your kids and grandkids shoot grab your parents and grandparents and GO DECORATE THE GRAVES! I always love hearing stories from people who come see us at the cemetery. If those stories never get told… they fade away. Come on out and see us. Shoot bring a chair and sit a spell. Tell me your stories of your loved ones. - Amanda.

Memorial Day weekend has kicked off. We were blessed with some extra flowers so all graves marked and not, have flowers. It almost looks like Easter eggs have been left. Nothing makes me sadder than a soul who has been forgotten. So even the “unknown” have been remembered. We also remember the military men who lay at rest here. Flags placed, taps played, and each name was read. 🇺🇸

Yes it’s cooler and threating rain constantly but grab your kids and come up and see us. Behind every headstone, flower, and flag is a story and I know a lot about nothing 😉 and I’d love to tell the stories. I added my personal FB post below.

Sitting in my spot in the cemetery like I do every year… just sobbing. Watching the flags on our service men here blow in the wind, in a world that has gone crazy let’s remember the real reason we have this weekend.

Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, is a time-honored day of remembrance dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives in military service to the United States. This day, originally known as Decoration Day, was established in the aftermath of the Civil War to honor both Union and Confederate soldiers who perished in the conflict.

Origins of Memorial Day

The origins of Memorial Day trace back to 1868, when General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance later that month. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion,” Logan declared. This date was chosen because it was not the anniversary of any particular battle, symbolizing unity and healing over division.

Today we use it as a weekend to remember everyone we’ve lost. Maybe it’s been awhile since you visited a cemetery but it’s a tradition that is slowly going away. I use to see kids here off and on all weekend now I see just a few. Maybe you don’t have someone close that you’ve lost, be thankful for that, but maybe you grab your kiddos and just go take a walk through the quiet places. Behind every headstone, flower, and flag is a story and a history. Don’t let the meaning of Memorial Day become a thing of the past.

Late notice because that’s how we roll lol. Tomorrow 9ish we’ll be having another cemetery clean up before the Memorial Day weekend kicks off. Weedeaters are always appreciated and even if you can’t physically help we always love having moral support stop by and chat.

Benjamin Franklin is quoted as saying: "Show me your cemeteries and I will show you what kind of people you have." How we care for the dead is a direct reflection of all of us.

Calling all strong men! Or guys with a hoist lol. So we’re needing some muscle or some good ole redneck engineering. The Hoskins stone was too heavy for the guys I had on Saturday for clean up so now I’m asking… anyone got a few hours this weekend May 3rd or 4th that can help me? I have everything to stick it back together except muscle. For every 1 square foot of granite is equal to about 175lbs. So we’re talking HEAVY! It’s still somewhat on the base. A few 2x4s, crowbars, straps and muscle should do the trick. Any volunteers? - Amanda

It’s that time of year again when the weather is warming and more visitors will be coming to visit our cemetery. Just a little update. The wind storms that hit us a few weeks back did cause a casualty or two. We’re actively researching the best adhesive to fix the Hoskins headstone and we’ll have the poor portapotty back up soon too. Also the update pictures of the headstones Deep Roots Restorations did last year. The pictures do NOT do them justice just how bright white they are after the cleaning from last year. Next month we will have the first clean up of the year. Old flowers will be removed, leaves burned (barring no red flags from winds) and the grounds will be mowed. I was pleasantly surprised at how many daffodils have popped up where I hadn’t seen them before. Keep your eyes peeled for the official clean up day and I’ll keep you posted on the restoration of the Hoskins headstone as we fix it back to its glory. - Amanda.

Remembering our service men who fought for our country. Flags were placed on Friday with a reading of the names, even though it was really just me saying their names out loud.

Another amazing clean up! Big shout out to John Ruppel for the “big mowing”, Dustin Jefferies for weedeating the whole yard, Tiffiani and Avaiah for “sweeping” the stones, and a HUGE SHOUTOUT to Tristan Watts and Dustin for fixing 2 headstones and a foot stone. I think I over thought it but those boys got it done. Dug, straightened and just all around helped me a lot. There’s been others up here cleaning when they can due to the rain (if I missed shouting you out I’m very sorry) but when I say the cemetery always looks beautiful for Memorial Day I mean this year is gonna be extra beautiful! I’m trying to burn leaves but I have a feeling I’ll be up here another day this week after the leaves dry some more. Can’t wait to see visitors next weekend!
