Memorial Day weekend has kicked off. We were blessed with some extra flowers so all graves marked and not, have flowers. It almost looks like Easter eggs have been left. Nothing makes me sadder than a soul who has been forgotten. So even the “unknown” have been remembered. We also remember the military men who lay at rest here. Flags placed, taps played, and each name was read. 🇺🇸
Yes it’s cooler and threating rain constantly but grab your kids and come up and see us. Behind every headstone, flower, and flag is a story and I know a lot about nothing 😉 and I’d love to tell the stories. I added my personal FB post below.
Sitting in my spot in the cemetery like I do every year… just sobbing. Watching the flags on our service men here blow in the wind, in a world that has gone crazy let’s remember the real reason we have this weekend.
Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, is a time-honored day of remembrance dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives in military service to the United States. This day, originally known as Decoration Day, was established in the aftermath of the Civil War to honor both Union and Confederate soldiers who perished in the conflict.
Origins of Memorial Day
The origins of Memorial Day trace back to 1868, when General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance later that month. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion,” Logan declared. This date was chosen because it was not the anniversary of any particular battle, symbolizing unity and healing over division.
Today we use it as a weekend to remember everyone we’ve lost. Maybe it’s been awhile since you visited a cemetery but it’s a tradition that is slowly going away. I use to see kids here off and on all weekend now I see just a few. Maybe you don’t have someone close that you’ve lost, be thankful for that, but maybe you grab your kiddos and just go take a walk through the quiet places. Behind every headstone, flower, and flag is a story and a history. Don’t let the meaning of Memorial Day become a thing of the past.
