Pleasant Hill Cemetery - Henderson County NC

Pleasant Hill Cemetery - Henderson County NC An old fashioned community cemetery managed by an all volunteer Board and supported by donations. Continue on until Kanuga Street becomes Kanuga Road.

The first burial in what is now known as Pleasant Hill Cemetery is believed to be Sarah Elizabeth Barton Drake who died during the civil war around 1865. The land was largely donated by the Drake family and could have been known as Drake Cemetery during its early years. There are up to six generations of Drake family members buried in the cemetery. The cemetery contains the graves of many that liv

ed in this community including the Brown, Camp, Capps, Johnson, Laughter, Prince, and Summey families. Pleasant Hill Cemetery is located on Kanuga Road about 3 1/2 miles from Hendersonville. From Main Street in Hendersonville, turn right onto Caswell Street that becomes Kanuga Street after crossing Church Street. The cemetery is located on the right side on the corner of Kanuga Road and Old Kanuga Road. According to the book "Postmarks" by Lenoir Ray, the Pleasant Hill Community was known as Delmont. It had a post office that was established on July 20, 1881. At some point the name was changed and is today called Pleasant Hill. According to Ray the name Pleasant Hill was derived from "Pleasant Hill" the estate of William Johnstone, son of Andrew Johnston who built Beaumont. William built Pleasant Hill in 1839 and sole it to Dr. Means in 1858.

The Christmas season is upon us once again. A good time for a quiet walk among the stones at Pleasant Hill. We hope you will take a moment out of the holiday excitement to still your mind and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. That being said, we invite you to share your Christmas pictures (we especially like the old ones) on this page. Let's celebrate Christmas Past and those who made it special and maybe even send a little donation in their honor.

Hello Pleasant Hill family! Sorry for the long pause on the page but these are exiting times for the Cemetery Board. Some of our founding members are stepping down and new members are being voted in. We ask all our supporters for their prayers, donations and ideas in the coming year. That being said, we are glad to be "still kicking" on Facebook (thanks to our good friend, Chip Drake.) We will have more news soon.

One last reminder this year to help us continue to build a fund for permanent upkeep of our family cemetery. We always have some repair cost including mowing, down tree removal and driveway repairs. Please consider sending an donation to help defray these costs. It's tax deductible as we are a non-profit. Thank you.

We have a wonderful website maintained by Barbara with information about it's history, a bit of background about each burial with photos of the tombstones and of many buried in our cemetery. You may also make donations online directly on the main page of our website. Check it out!

A critical tree situation was recently resolved at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Two trees which bordered the cemetery property next to Old Kanuga Road were dying and at risk of falling. They posed a dangerous threat to drivers and the power lines on Old Kanuga Road. If they had fallen on the cemetery...

We are thankful today for our ancestors. Thankful that they had the strength of heart and body to survive and even prosper in hard times to build this life for us. May we honor their memories and cherish our family today, both the living and those who have passed to their reward.

Well, the storm damage to Pleasant Hill was not serious. We have some good sized branches down and plenty of stray leaves but no damage to monuments. Though weather and personal circumstances have prevented a clean up so far, we are planning to meet at the cemetery tomorrow morning (Tues. Nov. 12) at 11:00AM for a quick spruce up. Apologies for the short notice but anyone wanting to help is welcome . bring your chain saw or leaf blower. Looks like good weather.

Today we salute our veterans as we care for their resting place with gratitude and pride.

Well folks, summer is growing old so here is an update on a PHC project just completed. We had been alerted by a family member of some dead trees along the border with the p***c road. A large red oak and another tree were indeed found to be dead but still sturdy. Board members Bob J and George D arranged for the NCDOT to cut the trees but they could not remove the debris. To the rescue came the good folks of Mud Creek Baptist Church. Their firewood ministry came out and cut up and removed all the wood and brush to be used as fuel for needy wood stoves this winter. We want to thank and commend the Mud Creek team for the good work they did for us and for the whole community.
