A very special second Sunday after Pentecost worship for Mary's last Sunday as pastor.
Hear some beautiful singing, a good word, and the best postlude in the history of church postludes!

First Sunday after Pentecost; light a candle and find some bread and a beverage to share in the Lord's Supper with us.

There is still much to be said and processed today after yesterday’s events. Start here with Presiding Bishop Michael Curry of the Episcopal Church.

“This evening, the President of the United States stood in front of St. John’s Episcopal Church, lifted up a bible, and had pictures of himself taken. In so doing, he used a church building and the Holy Bible for partisan political purposes. This was done in a time of deep hurt and pain in our country, and his action did nothing to help us or to heal us.

The bible teaches us that “God is love.” Jesus of Nazareth taught, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The prophet Micah taught that the Lord requires us to “do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with our God.”

The bible the President held up and the church that he stood in front of represent the values of love, of justice, of compassion, and of a way to heal our hurts.

We need our President, and all who hold office, to be moral leaders who help us to be a people and nation living these values. For the sake of George Floyd, for all who have wrongly suffered, and for the sake of us all, we need leaders to help us to be “one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all.”

Pentecost 2020 Iona

May the Spirit who mothered creation
and enabled Incarnation
continue to form and nurture us as we stumble towards maturity;

The Spirit who led Jesus into the wilderness
stir us out of ease and safety
as we follow the way of Christ;

The Spirit who transformed the disciples
grace and gift us
for the task of building God’s Kingdom;

The Spirit whom Jesus bequeathed
continue to comfort and discomfort us
until justice prevails, peace reigns
and love directs all.

An edited excerpt from our prayers of the people this morning.
Join us as a congregation committed to doing the hard work of facing what we don’t always want to acknowledge and to staying with the Spirit in the midst of the chaos all around. Join us in looking for and being the helpers.

God of many languages, You sing the language of joy with us, you join us in the dance of life. You also speak the languages of pain, of sorrow, of fear, of despair.
Hear all your children who speak, who wail, who whisper in these languages this day: Minneapolis, Baltimore, New York, Louisville, Los Angeles; the places around the world where violence and conflict is erupting yet unknown to us.
May all those whose language is rent by pain hear you lamenting with them. Give us the courage as white followers of Jesus to stand and kneel and sit in the ashes of lament alongside all who need to know they are seen, heard, and valued, especially for black and brown folks whose histories and realities are shaped by oppression and racist systems and structures. Lead us forward as people of the Spirit, ready to be the face of your love, light, hope, and life in the world.
We pray as people of the Spirit, who lights our fires, who fills our lungs with air, who blows us out into the world to live and serve and love without limits. Amen.

Courageous Pentecost, friends.

My participation in Sunday church services began when my parents enrolled me in the “cradle roll department” in our Texas Baptist church. Seventy-four years later, I’ve seldom missed Sunday-to-Sunday involvement with a worshiping congregation whether in pew or pulpit. Until now. I’m still
