Every year on the first Friday of June, America
celebrates National Donut Day with free treats and donut deals, but behind the glaze
and sprinkles is a powerful history of remarkable women who showed up with
compassion when it mattered most. This June 5, The Salvation Army invites its neighbors to fill our community with joy by honoring the heart and resilience of
the tradition.
National Donut Day was established in 1938 to honor the women who volunteered with
The Salvation Army to provide spiritual and emotional care, critical supplies, and freshly
fried donuts to American soldiers on the front lines of World War I. These women
became known as “Donut Lassies,” and today, their legacy is a reminder that small acts
of kindness can carry enormous joy

SA Hendersonville
God's timing is always perfect. When the water fountain started malfunctioning at the office, a man named Brian walked through the door. Although he had a different purpose for his visit, he saw an immediate need for his skills. He went to his truck, grabbed his tools and took care of our water issue. Brian then shared his original reason for coming in. He carried a framed newspaper article and a Red Salvation Army bell. He found these items at a home in Henderson County and felt they needed to be saved. He gave them to The Salvation Army of Hendersonville. We gladly accepted his gift. The bell and article belonged to Paul and Janet Vaughan, who provided many volunteer hours to The Salvation Army. This gift will be displayed in our office.

Are you interested in volunteering with The Salvation Army? Call our office, 828-693-4181, or stop by our office, 239 3rd Ave East, the office entrance is on the corner of 4th and Grove. It takes you to create a volunteer army that helps others in our community.

Called.

The people who give their lives to The Salvation Army – officers, soldiers, employees, volunteers – aren't doing a job. They answered something.

Some heard it as kids and never let it go. Some heard it later, after a long road that didn't go where they thought it would. Some heard it through a corps officer who showed up when nobody else did. Some heard it in a recovery program, on the other side of the worst chapter of their lives.

They didn't all hear it the same way. They all said yes.

"God hasn't called the world to provide that love; He called us, The Salvation Army, you and me." – Commissioner Donna Igleheart

To love. To serve. To follow. That's the calling. And there are nearly 1.6 million people across the country – officers, employees, and volunteers – living it out right now.
