Recovery Month story.

“For me, recovery isn’t just about not using drugs or alcohol anymore. It’s about everything that came back when I got sober.

The picture on left is me sitting in jail. Addiction had taken me places I never thought my life would go. I had hurt people I loved, damaged relationships, lost trust, and honestly had no idea what my future was going to look like.

The picture on the right is me and Heather today. And that picture represents so much more than two people smiling.

Recovery gave me the opportunity to become a husband Heather can count on. It gave us the chance to build a marriage centered around God instead of chaos. It gave our kids a dad and stepdad who is present, dependable, and actually there for the moments that matter.

Recovery has changed our entire family.
It hasn’t made life perfect. We still have hard days. We still have things we have to work through. But today we get to work through them together instead of addiction tearing everything apart.

One of the greatest things recovery has taught me is that God can take the parts of your story you are most ashamed of and use them for something you never could have imagined.
That mug shot is part of my story, but it doesn’t define my story.

Today, Heather and I get the privilege of walking alongside other people and families through Recovery Refuge and Celebrate Recovery. We get to watch men rebuild relationships, become fathers again, find purpose, grow in their relationship with Christ, and discover that their worst chapter doesn’t have to be their last chapter.

That’s what recovery means to us. It means restoration, It means family. It means second chances, It means freedom, And most of all, it means Jesus.

Your story isn’t over.” -Ryan

A huge thank you to the Akers family and the entire City Wide Facility Solutions team for stepping up for Michael!
Last night, we shared that Michael was coming into Recovery Refuge straight from jail with little more than the clothes on his back. Today, the Akers and City Wide stepped up and provided Michael with a Walmart gift card that he’ll be using to get some much needed work clothes and a new pair of work boots.
I’m incredibly thankful to work for a company owned by a family that doesn’t just talk about supporting the community, but actually steps up when there’s a need.
Thank you to the Akers family and City Wide for believing in second chances and helping us remind Michael that he isn’t walking this road alone.
We’re grateful for every person and business that comes alongside the men of Recovery Refuge. You’re making a bigger difference than you know.

🚨 URGENT NEED — HELP US WELCOME MICHAEL TO RECOVERY REFUGE 🚨
Today, Michael was released from the Sumner County Jail and walked into Recovery Refuge ready to begin a new chapter.
While incarcerated, Michael was actively involved in Sunday services and discipleship groups, and we’re excited to see him continue growing in his faith and recovery.
Michael came to us today with nothing but the clothes on his back.
We’re asking our community to help us bless him with Walmart gift cards so he can purchase clothes, shoes, toiletries, and other basic necessities.
Whether it’s $10, $25, $50, or whatever you feel led to give, it will make a difference.
Let’s show Michael that he’s not starting this new life alone. Please keep him in your prayers as he takes these first steps! 🙏
Welcome to Recovery Refuge, Michael. Your new chapter starts today. ❤️

🔵🔵If you feel led to give you can message us or gift cards can be dropped off at our Exodus house at 1016 new Shackle Island Drive and given to our house manager Brian!

This smile is about so much more than new teeth. ❤️
When Benny came to Recovery Refuge from Seattle, Washington, he had no idea what God had in store for his life. After years of addiction, Benny truly believed he would never have nice teeth again. Today, he’s smiling with a confidence we haven’t seen before and we couldn’t be happier for him.
A huge thank you to Dr. Jason Tabor and the entire team at Tabor Dental for giving Benny a brand-new smile. Their generosity has changed his life in ways that go far beyond dental work.
Anyone who has walked through addiction knows how much it can take from you, not just physically, but emotionally. For Benny, getting his smile back has given him a new level of confidence. He smiles bigger. He carries himself differently. And most importantly, it’s another reminder that his past does not define his future.
Today, Benny serves as the House Manager of our Genesis House, pouring into other men and helping them walk the same road of recovery that he has walked.
We can’t begin to tell you all the amazing things God has done in Benny’s life since he came to Recovery Refuge. This new smile is just one more picture of restoration.
Dr. Tabor, thank you for believing in our ministry, supporting our men, and using what God has given you to bless others. Your generosity made a difference that Benny will carry with him every single day.

We love you, Benny. Keep smiling, brother! 💪 Tabor Dental Associates

Today we had the opportunity to celebrate one of our own, Brian, the House Manager of our Exodus House.
To know Brian is to love Brian. He has become an incredible leader in our program, but even more than that, he's a genuine encourager who loves the men in his house well. He leads by example, points others to Christ, and is always willing to invest his time in someone who needs it.
This past February, Brian suffered a severe leg injury and has endured three surgeries over the last several months. It hasn't been an easy road, but we're thankful to say he's on the mend and getting stronger every day.
If you know Brian, you know that when he's healthy, he's usually the first one to volunteer to help with a project, lend a hand, or show up for someone in need. He's a servant through and through.
Today was our chance to give a little of that encouragement back to him.
Help us celebrate Brian and continue praying for a full recovery. We love you, brother, and we're grateful for the impact you make every single day at Recovery Refuge! ❤️

Thank you, Amanda & Jesse for lunch & cake! 🎂

Love you buddy!

Another group of men graduating! What a blessing to celebrate what God is doing through Recovery Refuge.
Today we celebrated four men who completed the last seven months of our program. We've watched them grow into leaders, strengthen their faith, encourage their brothers, and allow God to transform their lives. Two will be staying with us to continue pouring into other men, while two are stepping into new chapters, one returning home to his family and one pursuing God's call to seminary.
The greatest reward is seeing how proud their families are and witnessing the life change that only Jesus can bring.
Today we also welcomed Chris into Recovery Refuge. From our conversations, it's clear he's hungry for a relationship with the Lord and ready for a fresh start. We can't wait to see what God has in store for him.
One group graduates, another journey begins. Please join us in praying for our graduates and for Chris as he begins his own journey of hope, healing, and transformation.

Some stories remind us that no one is ever too far gone for God.
Billy has spent over 20 years of his life incarcerated, but that's not what defines him anymore. In this video, he shares how surrendering his life to the Lord, coming to Recovery Refuge, and truly seeking Jesus has completely changed the direction of his life.
I love Billy, and it's been an honor to watch God transform him from the inside out. His story is proof that no matter what your past looks like or how many mistakes you've made, God can redeem it. Jesus is still changing lives, restoring hope, and making all things new.
If you're struggling today or think you've gone too far, don't believe that lie. There is hope, there is freedom, and there is a God who never gives up on people.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come." — 2 Corinthians 5:17

Today we got together as the Recovery Refuge family with the guys from both Genesis House and Exodus House. It was just a family meeting and check-in, but the Holy Spirit showed up in a big way.
There was so much gratitude, honesty, and love in that room. It's hard to put into words what it feels like to sit back and watch these men encourage each other and give God the credit for what He's doing in their lives.
Adam and I always say that God brings the men to Recovery Refuge that He wants here, and every time we're together, that just gets confirmed even more.
When I look at this picture, I don't just see faces. I see freedom. I see men who have grown so much in their recovery and in their walk with the Lord. Proud doesn't even begin to cover it.
I'm thankful every single day that God lets me have a front-row seat to watch lives change. And I'm thankful for Adam's obedience to God's calling to start Recovery Refuge. None of this happens without that first "yes."
God is still in the business of changing lives, and I'm grateful to get to witness it.
