with Shawn Spino
Greetings, ladies, gentlemen and all God's children and peace be to you!
CORPUS CHRISTI SUNDAY - June 7, 2026
"Cibavit eos ex adipe frumenti, alleluja:" -- "He fed them with the fat of wheat, alleluja:"
The origins of the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body of Christ (Festum Sanctissimi Corporis Christi), is relatively new, when compared against the major feasts of Easter, Christmas or Pentecost, arising from growing medieval devotion to the Eucharist beginning in the 13th century AD. In 1264, Pope Urban IV established the feast with the bull, "Transiturus de hoc mundo". During the 14th and 15th century it picked up steam, being reaffirmed by Popes Clement V and John XXII. Finally, with the Council of Trent, the doctrines of the Real Presence and Eucharistic Adoration formed the framework for the liturgy.
Fast-forward to the 1920s and the Feast was one of the most beloved solemnities of the Roman Rite. The observances consisted of a solemn High Mass, the chanting of the Lauda Sion before the Gospel, an Eucharistic procession through the streets, fields or parish grounds, the singing of Pange Lingua, and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
"et de petra, melle saturavit eos, alleluja, alleluja, alleluja." -- "and filled them with honey out of the rock, alleluja, alleluja, alleluja."
Expectedly, the music this week is very much focused on both the bread and the Bread. As with last week, several additional videos are included in today's playlist, highlighting several beautiful hymns from the ancient Church, including an excellent rendition of the Lauda Sion. Also, another thought-provoking sermon from Bishop Barron on the Real Presence.
This Sunday, we will be opening with #487 - "Gift of Finest Wheat". We prepare the gifts with #502 - Seed, Scattered and Sown. We give our thanks first with #493 - "I Am The Bread of Life", followed by #511 - "Taste and See" and finally, #498 - "One Bread, One Body". Our recessional will be #721 - "Holy God, We Praise Thy Name"
