GOD LOOKS AT THE HEART
We spend so much time worrying about how we appear on the outside: what we say, what we do, how people perceive us.
But Scripture keeps bringing us back to the same place:
The heart.
“Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.”
— Proverbs 4:23
Jesus said, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”
— Matthew 12:34
The mouth reveals what the heart has been storing.
Our actions reveal what the heart desires.
And God sees what nobody else can see.
“Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the hearts.”
— Proverbs 21:2
We can convince ourselves that we’re right.
We can convince others that we’re fine.
We can even do the right things for the wrong reasons.
But God weighs the heart.
He isn’t only asking, “What are you doing?”
He’s asking:
“What is happening in you?”
“What do you desire?”
“What are you pursuing?”
“What have you allowed to take root?”
Because eventually, what is in the heart will come out of the life.
So the prayer isn’t simply, “Lord, change my behavior.”
It’s:
“Lord, search my heart. Correct my desires. Purify my motives. Guard what I’m allowing to take root in me. Give me a heart that is fully Yours.”
Because God is far more concerned with the posture of our hearts than the appearance of our lives.
Before God changes what comes out of us, He wants to deal with what is inside of us.
And maybe the most sobering part is this:
God doesn’t just see what we do. He sees why we do it.
