As you walk through Maple Hill Cemetery, you'll come across some interesting gravestones; this stone is no exception.

Hidden amongst many vertical stones is this ledger stone that belongs to John H. Clary. This stone has the oldest death date etched on a gravestone in the cemetery.

Below, it reads:

Sacred to the memory of
John H. Clary.
Who was born in the state of
New York
August 16th, 1809
& was accidentally shot
February 18th, 1827.

Little to no information can be found on Clary. His remains were reinterred in Maple Hill Cemetery after Graveyard Hill was bombarded during the Battle of Helena.

One can only imagine how Clary met his fate in 1827, but his memory continues to live on nearly 200 years later.

β€’ October 14, 1828

The oldest person buried in Maple Hill Cemetery is Joel Craig, the son of the famed "Father of Bourbon," Elijah Craig.

Craig was born in Virginia just months before the United States declared independence from Great Britain. At the age of 53, he passed away at his residence in Helena after battling an illness for only three days.

Below is the gravestone of Joel Craig (February 23, 1776-October 1, 1828) and his wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" Putnam Craig (January 19, 1780-July 29, 1839). Originally, this stone was located on Graveyard Hill.

You can learn more about Joel Craig from this video from our series of landmarks in Maple Hill: https://youtu.be/EmThzNWwth8?si=X2ebZX3NNPpZRhz7

This morning, Mr. Walter Morris and a cleanup crew tackled a large fallen tree limb in Maple Hill Cemetery near the Hindman Memorial obelisk. Unfortunately, upon removal of the debris, it was discovered that a gravestone was damaged.

Additionally, the crew cleaned up the Confederate Cemetery.

If you would like to help with the cost of maintaining and preserving this historic cemetery, please visit maplehillhelena.org/give. Maple Hill is a non-profit organization and relies on contributions and donations. All forms of contribution are greatly appreciated.
