ALL SAINTS’ DAY & ALL SOULS’ DAY
The Communion of Saints – A Franciscan Reflection

Today, November 1, we celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints, giving thanks for the countless men and women who have attained the glory of heaven. They are our brothers and sisters in faith who remind us that holiness is not a distant dream, but a calling entrusted to each one of us.

Tomorrow, November 2, we commemorate All Souls’ Day, remembering in prayer all the faithful departed, especially those who are being purified on their journey toward the fullness of eternal life. We entrust them to God’s infinite mercy and love.

This beautiful image portrays St. Francis of Assisi reaching out to souls in need of heavenly glory. It reminds us of the Franciscan spirit of compassion, prayer, and hope. Francis teaches us that love does not end with death. We are united in Christ through the Communion of Saints: those who have gone before us, those who journey with us today, and those who await the fullness of God’s presence.

As Franciscan family, we are reminded that our vocation is to be instruments of God’s mercy, praying for one another, accompanying those who suffer, and proclaiming the hope of the Resurrection.

May the saints inspire us, may God’s mercy embrace our departed brothers and sisters, and may we all one day rejoice together in the eternal light of Christ.

What is a saint? Far too often we think of saints as those people who are really good and we are not among them. We forget that we are all called to be saints and to live our lives completely for God. Today’s readings from the Solemnity of All Saints remind us how to live in our daily lives in a way which keeps us focused on serving God.

The Gospel describes how a believer tries to live: poor in spirit, mourning, meek, seeking righteousness, merciful, clean of heart, peacemakers and accepting persecution. We may find ourselves a long way apart from these values and ways of living, but we can still choose to embrace them because it is the invitation of God Himself.

All of this helps us realize why we celebrate this Solemnity of All Saints today. These ordinary women and men became great because of their commitment to the Lord Jesus. These women and men sought God as the main focus of their lives. These women and men served others with love.
We Catholics believe in a “communion of the saints,” which means that all who have died and all who still live are able to touch one another’s lives in some mysterious way. Those who are with God are still able to intercede for our wellbeing and we are able to be in relationship with them. Our faith is not about being alone, but about being with all others through all eternity. Today we give thanks for those who have gone before us and who intercede with God for us. Let us rejoice with them!

A HISTORIC MILESTONE FOR THE FRANCISCAN FRIARS OF HEBBRONVILLE!

We are pleased and grateful to announce that the encyclopedia entry on the Franciscan Friars of Hebbronville has been officially published in the Handbook of Texas, by the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA)!

This publication represents an important milestone in preserving and sharing the remarkable history of the Franciscan presence in Hebbronville, Texas, which began in 1926 when Franciscan friars, exiled from Mexico during the Cristero period, arrived in this community and established a lasting legacy of faith, education, evangelization, and service.

Having this history officially recognized and included in the Handbook of Texas ensures that the story of the Franciscan Friars of Hebbronville becomes part of the historical record of our great state.

We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who has contributed to researching, documenting, and preserving this important chapter of our local and Franciscan heritage.

100 Years of Franciscan Presence in Hebbronville — A Legacy of Faith, Hope, and Service!

Gospel of the Day (Luke 14,1.7-11)

On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully.
He told a parable to those who had been invited, noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table.
When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at table in the place of honor. A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him,
and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say, 'Give your place to this man,' and then you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest place.
Rather, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place so that when the host comes to you he may say, 'My friend, move up to a higher position.' Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table.
For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

Gospel of the Day (Luke 14,1-6)

On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully.
In front of him there was a man suffering from dropsy.
Jesus spoke to the scholars of the law and Pharisees in reply, asking, "Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath or not?"
But they kept silent; so he took the man and, after he had healed him, dismissed him.
Then he said to them, "Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern, would not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day?"
But they were unable to answer his question.
