For Chubby Plumpkins:

She wore midnight like it was tailored,
iridescent in the light,
feathers catching a brilliant shimmer
as if she carried her own atmosphere.

Chubby Plumpkins.
Name: charming.
Reputation: formidable.

Matriarch of many flocks—
then just her and her BFF, Muffy,
ruling side by side
like they had drawn the map themselves.

Then, just Chubby,
holding the whole place together
with attitude and a highly effective glare.

And finally, the five—
a last flock, gifted and green.
She trained them well,
tolerated them…selectively,
and made it clear who was Head Hen.

She knocked on the Refectory doors
with the confident peck, peck, peck
of someone who had never once been ignored.

Guests adored her.
Cookies feared her.
Picnic tables were simply
elevated opportunities.

She outlasted fires, foxes, coyotes, and dogs—
a survival record that reads less like luck
and more like strategy.

Seven, maybe eight years?
Steady, unapologetic rule.

And now, things feel…slightly less in order.

Legends don’t die, they become part of the story.
And let’s be honest:
we’re all just doing our best to run things
half as well as she did.

❤️💔
RIP Chubby. You were well-loved.

Join us for Choral Evensong at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco this Thursday, March 12, at 5:30pm. A beautiful service of music, prayer, and reflection in one of the Bay Area’s most inspiring sacred spaces.

After the service, we will gather in the Chapter house for a reception where you’ll have the chance to learn what’s happening at The Ranch, hear about our Annual Fund, get the latest on Summer Camps, and enjoy delicious small bites from The Ranch Kitchen.

You can also meet a representative from NextGen, a growing community of younger Ranch Alumni who are building connections, gathering for events, and helping shape the future of this shared ministry. They’ll be on hand to share a little more about what they’re up to and how you can get involved.

Whether Evensong is a long-time tradition or a new experience, we hope you’ll join us for a meaningful evening together.

Please RSVP by Monday, March 9 to [email protected]

BREAD Camp at The Bishop’s Ranch is more than a week away. It’s a space to belong.

Campers spend their days exploring the outdoors, creating art, swimming, hiking, laughing loudly, and building community that lasts long after the week ends. They also experience worship that is thoughtful, inclusive, and grounded in love — a safe space to explore faith without pressure or pretense.
