Fasting, like so many other things in Scripture, is physical symbol of Spiritual value unless it is done deliberately when we desire nothing but to seek God.
Type of fast:
Absolute fast: no food or drink
Normal fast: limited time
Partial fast: limited diet
Biblical Perspective:
Job 23:12 (KJV) Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.
Counsel:
The Bible clearly states that one should fast but a problem arises when we ask the question,
"Why?" One's motivation is extremely important
1 Corinthians 4:5 (KJV) Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.
Jesus tells us that the hypocrites fast to show other people that they area fasting
Matthew 6:16 (KJV) Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
A Christian we are called to fast for spiritual purpose in secret
Matthew 6:18 (KJV) That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
Fasting is a response to God he speaks; we stop and given him our attention.Unlist we are responding from the heart to a word from God, our fasting maybe motivated by self - interest.
The motives for fasting area spoken of in Isaiah 58:6 (KJV) Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?
Isaiah 58:7 (KJV) Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?
The results of a chosen fast of God are shown in Isaiah 58:8 (KJV) Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.
Principally the motives acceptable to God area these where one's desire is to seek the Lord and intercede for a person or situation.
The results are personally edifying as well as beneficial to whom or whatever the fast was for.
