We wanted to share with you a report from our team inside the refugee camp. It gives some insight into our work with the children in the camp.
We have a vision at the Light of Life Center inside the Yazidi camp to plant Christian values in the hearts of children and to teach them Bible stories and principles, so that over the coming years we can raise up a generation in the camp that we call “a Generation of Blessing.”
From the beginning, the vision has focused on a generation of children who were born inside the camp and have known nothing of life outside the camp. Sadly, this generation has grown up under very difficult circumstances, as most of their parents have gone through harsh experiences such as displacement and the hardships of camp life. These children were born in 2014 and 2015, and they are now between 10 and 12 years old. They are very similar to the generation that was born in the wilderness with Moses after the Exodus from Egypt — a generation that did not see civilization and knew only the desert, yet became a generation of blessing.
This is why God placed on our hearts the idea of focusing on this generation. For years, brother Irfan and I have been talking about what God will do through them in the future. We have been serving the Yazidi community for several years, and because of the complexity of this society, ministry and sharing the Gospel has not been easy. Yet we are almost the only church that God has allowed to serve among them with continuity until today, because we strongly believe that one day God will visit this people and raise from among them a great generation of blessing.
What we offer at the center is similar to what any church offers: Bible stories, worship songs, and prayer. We meet with the children three days a week. Those who lead the programs are believers who are the fruit of the organization’s ministry in the camp, and they are trained to teach Bible stories and serve the children spiritually.
The Light of Life children’s ministry is not only about teaching stories, but also about providing a different environment where children can see and experience things they have never seen before in the camp. We provide recreational activities, games, and psychological and spiritual support through the Light of Life team working with us in the camp.
This year we will encourage the children to take these stories outside the center and share them with their families, friends, and neighbors, so that God’s Word can spread in the community through the children themselves.
We currently serve about 50 children. We meet three days a week, and the team consists of four staff members.
