Faith Matters Sunday School Group

Faith Matters Sunday School Group Faith Matters is an adult Sunday School class at Hazel Green United Methodist Church. We lean on each other to grow closer to God.

Because of the brunch tomorrow between the two services, we will not be having any Sunday school classes. We will pick up next week.

One of our own shared some sad news with Annette and I last night. Linda Fry has been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a rare neurodegenerative disease that causes nerve cells in the brain to lose their ability to function over time. They asked me to send this out to the class letting everyone know. You can find out more about FTD here:

https://www.learnftd.com/about-ftd/

Linda is actually handling the news very well… but frankly, David is not. Please keep them both in your prayers, as our Faith Matters group is the first folks they've told outside of their immediate family. They certainly don't want pity, but they do covet our prayers.

As I look to find what could be any silver lining in this, the FTD site says that life expectancy after symptoms start is 7 to 13 years, so the medical world has some time to find new breakthroughs to help Linda fight this terrible disease. And besides, we know our GOD is great and can do anything. She is enrolling in a Vanderbilt clinical study, as the FIRST patient, to look at specific treatments for this disease.

And to David and Linda, We love you and are here for you.

Annette woke up with a sore, scratchy throat, and some body aches (wasn't sure if they were new), so she took a COVID test "just to be sure"... well, she's sure. She tested positive. I tested since I've been around her, and unsurprisingly came back negative. If I'm going to test positive, it will likely take 2-3 days before I do so. CDC suggests that I be tested on or after the 29th if I don't develop symptoms before then.

Out of an abundance of caution, and particularly for our older population, I will not be attending church or Sunday School tomorrow.

Unless Kellie wants to cover the questions for video six of our series, we'll skip class tomorrow.

Regards,

Rich

Look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow in person! I know there are some who won't be there yet, and that's OK. Hopefully, we'll have enough to pick back up on our Don't all Religions Lead to God discussion.

Per Dorothy Ann, no in-person worship or activities today. Apologies for the late decision, but we all have experienced no-show weather events before. Please spread the word and stay safe!

Based on the number of folks who’ve told me they won’t be able to be there tomorrow for a number of reasons, we’re going to cancel Sunday School this week, and try again next week (23rd). Hope those of you dealing with COVID are better soon, and all of you have a good weekend and a good week.

Regards,

Rich

I'm OK with continuing Sunday School this week, even with some families deciding to take a break until the COVID numbers go down, two families dealing with it, and some of us fresh off of it. If you're newly deciding to stay away, please let me know. We may just not have enough to continue.

I do recommend that we use our big room to spread out between couples/individuals. 😉

Hope to see you Sunday.

There are no simple answers for how we handle COVID. As I suspected, the answers to the survey were all over the map, with class members selecting five of the six options available, and someone sending me an email response that's sort of a hybrid. When I bunch the various versions of yes and no together, however, 75% (counting the emailed answer not reflected below) of class members were comfortable continuing class at this point. Since the majority would prefer masks or to take a break, however, I will request that we wear our masks out of respect for those who requested them and may be dealing with underlying health issues that we're simply not aware of.

Thank you and I hope to see you tomorrow!

Dec 26th and Jan 2nd will be combined 10:00 worship services, so we will not be having Sunday School both dates. See you all on the 9th! Merry Christmas!

10/16/2021

By more than 70%, the preferred start date is this Sunday (17th), so we’ll start back THIS WEEKEND!

We do have some class members who can’t yet return for health reasons and a few that chose later dates. They can all join us as their situation allows.

I’ll be delighted when we can all be together again and COVID is behind us!

See you Sunday!

I really hate that I have to post this. Based on the fact that one of the most careful people I know in terms of COVID still got it (Annette), the high transmission of the Delta variant, and the fact that the Huntsvllle Hospital System is almost to 80% of the worst COVID inpatient count they had back during the winter, I recommend we take a month break from class. After a month we’ll take a look at the numbers and decide if the situation is good enough to return.

I’m really sorry, but I think it’s the smart thing to do.

Regards,

Rich
