Today we will participate in a Deacon Ordination Service, much like this church has done for over 125 years. Calling and ordaining faithful men to serve as deacons of Hazard First Baptist.
Ordination is a way for the church to recognize God’s work in a person’s life and to acknowledge his readiness to serve. In the Book of Acts, the church chose Spirit-filled men to help meet practical needs among the believers, and the apostles prayed and laid hands on them (Acts 6:1–6).
Paul later gave clear qualifications for deacons, emphasizing integrity, faithfulness, self-control, and a sincere commitment to the faith (1 Timothy 3:8–13).
An ordination service does not make someone more important than other believers, nor does it give him a higher standing before God. Rather, it marks the church’s recognition of his character and calling to serve. It also reminds the congregation that deacon ministry is a shared responsibility: the church is to pray for, encourage, and work alongside those who serve.
As we lay hands on Ron and pray this date October 25, 2026, we ask God to strengthen him for this ministry. We do so with thankful hearts for his willingness to serve, and a desire that his service will honor Christ and build up the church.
So please join with our Deacon Body; Michael Sims, Paul Collins, Larry Riddle, Roland Combs, Jim Sidwell, Tim Perkins, Mark Stewart and pastors Sug Brashear and Tim Reynolds in this service to ordain Ron Howard as a Deacon of Hazard First Baptist Church.

What makes a church successful in its mission and ministry? I have often studied this question and wondered how First Baptist Church might use programs, ideas, mission statements, and challenging goals to serve faithfully.
After fifty years in Christian ministry, however, I have come to understand that success is not measured by programs, attendance, or the size of a budget. Ministry is about people—and, in one word, “relationships.”
First comes our relationship with God. It is the foundation and hope of ministry. As we draw near to God, follow Jesus, and surrender our priorities to his kingdom, our lives can point others toward Christ. Jesus said, “And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself”
From that first relationship flows our life together as a church. Because we share one Father, we are called to love, serve, forgive, and encourage one another.
When we seek first to love God and then love one another, we become a community where our neighbors may experience Christ’s care, want to know about the same love. Programs and plans can help, but they must serve people and support the church’s God-given mission, not replace it. Our ministry will bear lasting fruit as we abide in Christ and faithfully love those He places around us. Seek to share His love with them
Let us trust Christ, love one another, and invite our neighbors to know his grace.
