Several years ago an article appeared in the Hazard Herald about the GPS mapping taking place at Riverside. The article did not mention the enormity of the effort though. Some 3300 stones exist in the cemetery as of the last count. So as you can imagine this will take some time. Boy did it. And then delays. Lots od delays.

3 years worth.

But finally we are back under way!

The current moment sees us at the end of the surnames beginning with F. So most everything before that is done. A-E.

Note #1: Not every grave will have info due to various circumstances.

Note #2: GPS will be accurate within 20 feet or so due to weather on the day of the mapping or position of the marker. It varies. Use the location as a general guide.

F.A.Q. #1: How will the GPS mapping of Riverside help me?

Answer: Riverside is the largest cemetery in a 9 county region and it can be tough to find that special someone if you've never visited, visited only occasionally or (even if) you visit regularly. It's a BIG place. So the mapping is designed to show you (nearly) exactly where the grave is located.

It works like this (see the 1st pic). If you were looking for Mark Anthony Abbott (and who isn't?) you could find him rather easily by taking out your cell phone (Android or iOS) and either opening the F.A.G. app or open Findagrave.com in your mobile web browser on the phone. Search for Riverside Cemetery. Then search for your loved one within Riverside Cemetery (for this example we'll search for Mark Anthony Abbott). See in the pic where it says "Show Map" and then has a bunch of numbers under it? Those are the GPS coordinates that will pinpoint Mark on a worldwide map. In your mobile browser click on that link to be taken to a map such is demo'ed in pic two.

The second picture is the result of the click. In this example YOU are by the roadside entrance and your loved one is pinpointed for you. Simply proceed towards the pinpointed location. You'll re-connect with old Mark Anthony in no time. Any questions?

It's insane how slow these things can go. But the GPS mapping project is indeed going THAT slow! A lot of that has to do with the new beta interface on the F.A.G. website that takes some time getting used to. Though I did discover (by total accident) that NOW if you upload a photo with GPS data it automatically adds that data for you along with the photo. That's a gift. Watch this space!
