We are a founding congregation and ongoing supporter of South Hayward Parish. UCH folks volunteer, serve on the SHP council, stock the food bank, and donate time and financial support. SHP provides a community food bank, day worker resources and assistance, a connecting point for community activism and justice seeking, and a temporary shelter and meal program for those who are unsheltered during cold or wet weather. UCH also strongly supports FESCO (The Emergency Shelter Coalition for men, women. We are proud to be making a difference in South Hayward!

Today, we gathered in-person in Hayward and online from the United Kingdom, Canada, North Carolina, Kentucky and beyond to thank Rev. Kathy for her service with us during our ✨Summer of Renewal✨, and to welcome Rev. Jeanne back from their sabbatical. We reflected, cried, and laughed, and move onto what’s next with openness and gratitude.

🌀There Is A Wonderful Game🌀

There is a wonderful game we should play,
and it goes like this:

We hold hands and look into each other’s eyes
and scan each other’s face.

Then I say, “Tell me a difference
you see between us. “

And you might respond, “Hafiz, your nose
is ten times bigger than mine!”

Then I would say, “Yes, my dear, almost
ten times!”

But let’s keep playing.
Let’s go deeper, go deeper.

For if we do, our spirits will embrace
and interweave,

our union will be so glorious
that even God will not be able to tell us apart.

This would be a wonderful game to play.

We can't live without water, physically or spiritually. In today's Gospel, a woman meets Jesus at a well, and he offers her "living water" — his way of saying that our deepest thirst isn't really about earthly things. What does that mean to her? What does it mean to you? Rev. Kathy Cramer closes out our Summer of Renewal — fifteen weeks of exploring where we find the holy — with "The Well That Never Runs Dry."

As we close out our ✨Summer of Renewal✨ and prepare to welcome Rev. Jeanne back on September 13, his words feel like the right ones to sit with: What we need is here.

This week we welcome guest preacher Rev. Dr. Laura Jean Torgerson for Week 13 of our Summer Renewal series, with a sermon called "A Beautiful Thing." She's sitting with the story of the unnamed woman who breaks open a jar of costly ointment to anoint Jesus — an act some around her called wasteful, but Jesus called beautiful. It's a story about finding beauty while staying committed to what justice asks of us: meeting real, material needs in the world.
