We read in the Books of Exodus and Numbers how God worked many wonders in bringing His people out of Egypt. The Israelites saw the 10 Plagues play out before their very eyes. They saw the Red Sea opened in front of them as they walked through dry shod. They ate their fill of the manna and drank the water from the rock. There is not much more that God and Moses could have done to convince the people that everything was under control. Nonetheless,

Itโs amazing how quickly the people go from being amazed at the appearance of the manna to calling it โwretched food.โ It all points to a vexing aspect of our human nature. We seem to be quite capable of adapting to just about anything, whether it is good or bad. On the one hand it seems to serve us well. The climate out here in western Kansas isnโt that great, but weโre used to it. On the other hand we can be the beneficiaries of the goodness and generosity of others. At first we are grateful, but as time goes on we come to expect their goodness and develop a sense of entitlement for it.
Today is the Feast of the Body and Blood of Jesus. It should be part of the daily practice of every Christian to contemplate the incomprehensible humility of our God Who makes Himself accessible to all of us under the meek forms of bread and wine. The great miracle of God coming to us under the form of bread and wine should leave us speechless. Yet, like the Israelites, we are more than capable of receiving this great gift and giving it no more thought and dropping a letter in the mailbox. Do we prepare to receive Our Lord worthily by getting to confession regularly and observing the Communion fast? If not, while we might not say it outright, by our attitude and actions we may be voicing the same attitude of the ancient Israelites of โbeing disgusted with this wretched food.โ And no one wants that!
