Someone wrote my brother Jose Montalvo , and they questioned that if Jesus is love why does he teach hate. To answer your question Rebecca Wiesenthal, He didn't teach hate He was trying to teach that there are more important things than what's on this earth. Like the things that will take us to Glory.
See you really have to understand the word of God!! In order to apply it to your life. JESUS is making a statement you can't be my disciple if you love your children , Mother, husband, more because they become your God. Yes, you can love them but not more than God.. Lets go back to the ten commandments # 1 I am the Lord your God,, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bo***ge. You shall have no other gods before Me. Notice the little g. I made a way of escape for you. I parted your Red Sea, I delivered you from captivity, oppression. (ME) GOD. It wasn't your daughter, son, husband, wife, mother, father. See you understand nobody can take God's place or His Glory. Ok #2 You shall not make for yourself a carved image.- any likeness of anything that is in heaven or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. I know you are created in Our image and likeness. You have the ability to create. But you cannot worship and serve a created thing. We must serve Our Creator. Our Heavenly Father. See the Word of God is very clear. He said if you reject me I will reject you. If you are not a Son of God than you are a son of the devil. I hope this helps someone.
