One’s life does not consist of possessions. (Luke 12:15)

A Bigger Barn vs. a Bigger Heart:
What will truly make us happy? Glossy magazine ads are, for some, a source of inspiration on this point. Basically, they are about “bigger barns”: a hotter car, redder lipstick, spectacular vacations. The rich fool believes that by increasing his capacity for material pleasure, he will be happier. But it’s an illusion. Like the running wheel for a gerbil, it is lots of movement without getting anywhere. We invest energy and effort acquiring things, but the bigger barns bring us little joy. That’s because our hearts not our barns are what really need to be enlarged. Our heart longs for love. That Augustinian restlessness will never leave us in peace until we have encountered the Lord who loves us and have discovered him in the relationships ordained by his providence.

When you are before the altar where Christ reposes, you ought no longer to think that you are amongst men; but believe that there are troops of angels and archangels standing by you, and trembling with respect before the sovereign Master of Heaven and earth. Therefore, when you are in church, be there in silence, fear, and veneration.
- Saint John Chrysostom

Success in Christ’s eyes is very different from success in the world’s eyes. In a certain sense, success in Christ’s eyes is measured precisely by how we respond to failures in the world’s eyes. Both the house built on sand and the one built on rock are bound to suffer storms. Something terrible some kind of failure or disaster is going to strike both of them. In the face of that storm, the house built on sand will collapse, and the house built on rock will endure. If we are putting our faith in Jesus and making our day-to-day decisions in accordance with his wisdom and grace, we are building our lives on rock ( The Church ) And so, even when persecution comes, or rejection, or any kind of suffering, we will be ready for it. And because we are anchored in Christ’s truth and love, we will stand strong in the face of it. That, in Christ’s eyes, is success. Not vast amounts of wealth, not immense popularity, not power and pleasure those things are secondary at best. They are not bad in themselves, but they will never fill our hearts with the stuff of lasting happiness. If we organize our lives seeking fulfillment in anything besides our relationship with Christ, eventually the storm will come and we will be sorely disappointed, maybe even for all eternity, if we don’t repent in time. And that is the only real failure we need be afraid of: “The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And it collapsed and was completely ruined.”

Jesus said to his disciples: “Now I am going to the one who sent me, and not one of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I told you this, grief has filled your hearts. But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.”
(John 16:5–7)

Throughout our lives, our Lord will call us to change. At times, He calls us away from that with which we are familiar and comfortable, and He calls us to something new. Though dramatic change is not necessarily a regular occurrence throughout life, most everyone will experience change at various moments in life. And when that change occurs in accord with the will of God, it must be embraced with hope and great expectation….. Since the Gospel passage above specifically refers to the change that comes from the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, it might be helpful to consider the fact that whenever some new change takes place in our lives, the Holy Spirit is there, waiting to enter into the new situation in ways we could have never imagined….. Reflect, tonight, upon anything that our Lord may be asking of you in regard to a change in your life. Are you open, ready and willing to do whatever He asks? Or are you fearful or grieved by the thought of some change. Be open to anything our Lord asks of you and know that the full embrace of His holy will is the only path to true happiness in life.
My dear Jesus, You prepared Your disciples for the new life of grace that they would receive after Your death and Resurrection. Though fearful and uncertain, they embraced the new life You called them to live, and You did marvelous things through them. Please open my heart to the full embrace of my vocation and any changes that You desire for my life. I say “Yes” to You, my Lord, and pray that You work powerfully through me by the Holy Spirit. Jesus, I trust in You.
