Dear Greater Temple Emanu-El Haverhill Community,

As the temple prepares to close our doors officially at the end of June, we are looking to make arrangements for the allocation of our precious artifacts. To accomplish this, the precious artifacts committee, the merger committee, and the breakout committees (Torah and yahrzeit) have been working to determine where each of these most precious items will reside: if they will come with us as we plan to join Temple Emanuel in Andover, or if there is more appropriate new home for these artifacts.

Additionally, the precious artifacts committee has done an amazing job cataloging these items, so that we can accurately account for all the artifacts in the building and preserve these records as an archive. The already completed reports for these can be located in the Google drive: Precious Artifacts.

We know that many of you would like to take certain artifacts with you, especially yahrzeit, dedication, and memorial plaques. Evaluating requests and distributing artifacts will be done after they are photographed by Historic New England at the end of this month. If you are requesting an artifact, please complete the Google form linked below, specifying the artifact and your family’s connection to it. Also, please indicate on the form if you would like to see any yahrzeit plaques go over to TE Andover if your plan is to affiliate there.

The board of directors and precious artifacts committee will discuss all requests and reply with the intended disposition of the artifact (to you, another congregation, or other disposition). For approved requests, items can be picked up from the office by appointment only starting in March or April. Item retrieval must be done in organized manner so that the office can continue to function through the end of June.

PLEASE NOTE: Completing this form DOES NOT guarantee that you will receive the artifact(s) requested. All decisions will be made by the board of directors as they determine what is best for our congregation as a whole. That could include selling, donating, or otherwise relocating items. All artifacts will be treated with appropriate respect and care.

We will be using a different system for books in HaSifriyah. Please do not use this form to request books.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected].

L’Shalom,
Jenn Lampron

Recently someone asked me what they would need to do to prepare for and celebrate Hanukkah. Almost immediately, I found myself saying that Hanukkah is a minor holiday in Jewish tradition since it is not biblically mandated. Furthermore, observing it is fairly easy. I’ve been thinking about my answ...
