Haverford Friends Meeting

Haverford Friends Meeting We are a growing, active, and dynamic Quaker Meeting in the heart of Philadelphia’s Main Line. Join us at 10:30 am every Sunday for worship and fellowship.

All are welcome. A religious community founded on the principals of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, the Religious Society of Friends. Haverford Friends Meeting has a long and historic connection with Haverford College and was the meeting where notable Quakers such as Douglas Steere, Thomas Kelley and Rufus Jones worshipped. The meeting cares for Friends School Haverford, which it founded 150 years ago, and which serves pre-K through 6th grade.

Outdoor Meeting for Worship and Picnic 🌷
On Sunday, June 7th, we worshipped together in the open air. The sounds of birds and a gentle breeze only enhanced the silence and peace of the gathering. We enjoyed a bar-b-q lunch at the rise of meeting.

“When I come into the silent assemblies of God’s people, I felt a secret power among them which touched my heart; and as I gave way unto it I found the selfishness weakening in me and the good raised up; and so I became thus knit and united unto them, hungering more and more after the increase of this power and life, whereby I might feel myself perfectly redeemed….”
- Robert Barclay, 1678

“Brevity, earnestness, sincerity—and frequently a lack of polish—characterize the best Quaker speaking. In a truly gathered meeting, restraint in one’s utterances is often more releasing than are multiplied words. Words that hint at the wonder of God, but that do not attempt to exhaust it, have an open-ended character.” Thomas Kelly, The Gathered Meeting

Quakers aren’t always quiet. On Sunday, May 17th, George Lakey visited us at Haverford Meeting. The Quaker activist, sociologist, and writer has led a remarkable life. We screened the documentary about that life and discussed his autobiography in the Forum Room at the rise of Meeting for Worship.
