It's been a busy week around St. Paul's!

•VBS was tremendous! What a delight it is each year to teach children about the great truths, works, and promises of Christ Jesus our Lord. A big thank you to all who assisted in any capacity!

•Many hours were spent preparing homemade ice cream and food for this evening's Ice Cream Social. We even had a baby on the loose, as you can see from the photos!

•The Children's Choir beautifully accompanied the music of the Divine Service with their little voices ever since sweetly singing the hymn "Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us."

•The wonderful women of WINGS presented their annual scholarship to college parishioners. May the Lord richly bless them as they endeavor to pursue more knowledge in order to serve and care for their neighbors.

•We bid farewell and Godspeed to a treasured member of our congregation, Arabella Blakeley, as she now moves out of the State. Bella--an artist--was gifted a replica work of Lucas Cranach (one of the greatest Lutheran artists to ever live).

Please keep our fellow Lutherans in your prayers as thousands have been displaced, watched their villages burn, and even been martyred by recent Muslim attacks.

Almighty God, heavenly Father, Your beloved Son assured His own that they would suffer in this world and yet called them to rejoice in His promise of a life no death could ever take from them. Strengthen all Your children living under persecution and threat of violence; fill them with Your unshakable peace and use their witness to bring salvation even to their persecutors and slanderers and, according to Your gracious will, bring an
end to the bloodshed and violence; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

This Memorial Day, we would like once again to share the story of Rev. Markus Ewald Lohrmann, U.S. Army captain and Lutheran chaplain who died trying to save his fellow soldiers in the Second World War.

Rev. Lohrmann was born on 26 December 1910 in Covington, Illinois, and died on 6 March 1944 in Milne Bay in Papua New Guinea; he was 33 years old. Lohrmann served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 24th Infantry Division. The 24th arrived on Goodenough Island in early 1944, and the island served as an important medical outpost during Gen. MacArthur's "island hopping" campaign in the Pacific Theater of the war.

On March 6th, 1944, Lohrmann and the other men of the 24th Infantry Division were in a small boat off the coast of Goodenough Island when their power failed. As they began to drift closer to Japanese waters, Rev. Lohrmann and two other men volunteered to swim back to land to get help. Rev. Lohrmann did not reach land with the other two swimmers, who found the chaplain's body while swimming back to their ship. They pulled him ashore and attempted in vain to resuscitate him. They buried him on Goodenough Island, and his body was re-interred at Oakridge Cemetery in Effingham, Illinois several years later.

In 2017, Rev. Lohrmann's daughter, Marcia Luecke, travelled to Papua New Guinea to retrace her father's steps and see the site of his original grave. Marcia was only 18 months old when her father died. The story of Marcia's pilgrimage and a wonderful tribute is available at the Find a Grave memorial website for Rev. Lohrmann: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/182682512/markus-e.-lohrmann

We had to snap this photo well before Divine Service began this morning, as two of our young men took it upon themselves to arrive early and to es**rt all the ladies of the parish to their pew this Mother's Day.

Mothers and all the women of the congregation play an important role in handing down the faith to the next generation. Thanks be to God for mothers!

“I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well” (2 Timothy 1:5).

Heavenly Father, Your Son in His incarnation took on our human flesh and was born of the Virgin Mary. He submitted to His mother, honoring and obeying her, so fulfilling the commandment where we have not. On this Mother’s Day, graciously accept our thanksgiving for our mothers, whom You have given to us. Teach us to honor them aright — loving, obeying and giving thanks for them, as is fitting in Your sight. Strengthen all women with child, and give them safe delivery. Comfort all women who long to have children but cannot, that they may find their consolation in You and Your unfailing love; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

It was a joy to welcome Rev. Jonathan Petzold and his wife Christa as they led us through a discussion of Male & Female: Embracing Your Role in God's Design.

Edifying, salutary, and much needed as Christians navigate the fallen world today seeking to be faithful and to live in sync with God's order.

Thank you!
