Last night, Jeannine Comito and Pastor Zach presented the first annual “Make a Difference” scholarship at Hauppauge High School. Because so many people in Hauppauge support our annual pumpkin patch, making such a difference at Calvary, we solicited entries for stories that made a difference in others’ lives. The funds for this scholarship came from the pumpkin patch, and the scholarship team, which also includes Council President Jackie Narkiewicz, was amazed by all the applicants’ stories. Congratulations Alexandra! Prayers for all your future endeavors! Hauppauge School District

Today is Pentecost.

O God, on this day you open the hearts of your faithful people by sending into us your Holy Spirit. Direct us by the light of that Spirit, that we may have a right judgment in all things and rejoice at all times in your peace, through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. —Bread for the Day

Last week, five new people were welcomed to God’s table! The day before, Deacon Tanya and Pastor Zach, as well as some parents and other family members, joined these young people in making bread and spending time learning more about the sacraments. It was a joyful weekend!

Presiding Bishop Yehiel Curry has released a statement on the shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego.

“As the ELCA, we must speak plainly: violence rooted in hatred is sin. We condemn Islamophobia and acknowledge its rise in recent years. Our church affirms that “anti-Muslim hatred is antithetical to our Christian faith” (A Declaration of the ELCA to the Muslim Community), for we are called to love our neighbor in ways that cast out fear (1 John 4:18).”
