Pride is arguably the worst sin that we commit. Trust me when I say we commit it daily. We can hardly escape our pride. It comes in so many forms, like being too proud to accept help from others; pride in our clothing, makeup and/or jewelry; our stubborn pride that prevents us from admitting we're wrong, forgiving others or from speaking to someone out of our anger; or our own superiority in how much better we drive than anyone else on the road. This list is almost endless. We can probably all think of something our pride has driven us to do today.

Adam and Eve's pride led them to fall to Satan's temptation in believing they could be like God. Genesis 3:5 - 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

God detests pride as it says in Proverbs 16:5 - "5 The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished." He shows favor to the humble as is said in 1 Peter 5:5 - "5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, 'God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.'"

When Jesus gave his Sermon on the Mount, the first thing he spoke of was humility. Matthew 5:3 - 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Even when we do good, is it our pride controlling our actions? Remember what Jesus said in Matthew 6:3-4 - "3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

We must be able to not think of ourselves too highly and search our hearts for our true intentions.

Romans 12:3
"3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you."

11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:11-13

God has many plans for us all! Remember Matthew 7:7: 7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

After you have asked for the Lord into your life you must seek His plans and you will find them. It is not always clear in the beginning, but as long as we are diligent we will discover His plan for us. We must prove to God that He is worth our effort. Once we discover His plan for us, the journey is just beginning. We must also work to fulfill His plan. God has many plans for us and we must seek them all and fulfill them all.

When we walk with the Lord, obeying His commands/plans we WILL prosper, NO harm WILL come to us and we WILL have hope and a future. In other words the door to the Lord’s Kingdom will be open to us will all His many riches!

19 Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

20 He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:19-20

Why does Jesus use the mustard seed to describe faith that can move a mountain? Could it be that the mustard seed is the smallest seed in the garden, but grows to be one of the largest plants in the garden? Maybe faith is not static and that faith has to grow and be nurtured.

7 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. Colossians 2:7

We must feed our faith by submersing ourselves in his word. The more we read and hear his message, the more our faith will grow and our “roots will grow down into him”. As it is said Romans 10:17, 17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.

We must also exercise our faith. Our words, action and deeds must work together to build the body of Christ. Then we are “building our lives on Him” and our faith will grow stronger.

22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. James 2:22

God offers us grace, but it is not a free pass to salvation, to do as we please with no consequences. For Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." God's grace must be earned!

We must have faith in God, that Jesus is His son and that God raised Him from the dead. As it says in Romans 10:9, "If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord', and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Our faith must be combined with actions, just as it says in James 2:14-17: "What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, 'Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,' but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead."

Titus 2:11-12 tell us we must also live that Christian way of life! "For grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say 'No' to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present ages,"

As it says in Matthew 6:15, "But if you do not forgive others your sins, your father will not forgive your sins." We must not only ask God for forgiveness of our sins, but we must also forgive others when they sin against us.

We have salvation through God's grace, but we must earn it through faith with action, living a righteous life and through forgiveness. The choice is ours...

Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; (1 Peter 5:2)

Leading a “flock” can be difficult. Leadership should never be about the leader, but rather about the goal, mission or vision. If it becomes about the leader, then when the leader moves on, the goal, mission or vision dies. Jesus was the ultimate leader. His mission was to provide us with a path to God’s Kingdom. He led by example, a sin free life, showing us it was possible. He was a teacher, teaching us the way to God’s kingdom. Finally, he put us ahead of himself, being crucified for our forgiveness. Even today, 2,000 years later, it is about his mission—our salvation.

Our mission, is the same as Jesus’, the salvation of our fellow man. He gave us a roadmap. Lead by example, teach our neighbors the path to salvation, and put our fellow man ahead of ourselves.

We are all members of the same body of Christ. As members of the body we each have a role in growing the Body, whether growing our own congregations or growing the body out in the world.

But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. (1 Corinthians 18)

Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. (1 Corinthians 27)

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, (Matthew 5:43-44)

It is easy to love our neighbors when times are good and we are getting along with everyone. What about the hard times and those we don't get along with. Those menacing individuals who choose to fight us on everything we do. Does it hurt anything except our own pride to love them?

10 Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. (Romans 13:10)

Show them what it means to be a Christian! What the "Christian Way of Life" is all about. Loving your neighbor as yourself. If we spent as much time praying for those who persecute us, they may spend less time persecuting us.

Wednesday Night we continued our deep dive into Matthew, moving to chapters 19 and 20. We had more great turn out and excellent open discussion!

We learned about divorce and the impact of sexual immorality. We tied in 1 Corinthians 7:4-5 which sates that the husband and wife no longer have authority over their own bodies, but that they yield to each other.

We also studied about the Rich and the Kingdom of God. God does not require that we live in poverty, but that we keep Him first over all earthly possessions. Putting your earthly possession first over God is a form of idolatry. Our salvation is still through Grace and Faith.

In the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard, we tied in Romans 9:15-16 as we discussed that God gives mercy and grace on His terms, not ours.

Jesus predicted his death a third time. We discussed Matthew 16:21 and how Peter Rebuked Jesus after the first prediction. In his second prediction in Matthew 17:22, the disciples were filled with grief, yet in his third prophecy, there is no response from His disciples recorded.

We learned of a Mother's request in which Jesus' Aunt (Mary's Sister) came and asked Jesus to place her sons (Jesus' cousins) at His right and left in His Kingdom. Jesus replying that those seats are not His to give. We also compared this to Mark 10:35-45 in which it reads that James and John requested the seats.

Thank you all who participated! Please join us every Wednesday Night at 6:30 pm as we continue our Matthew Deep Dive.

We studied Matthew chapters 17 & 18 in Wednesday evening Bible Study.

We learned about Jesus Transfiguration and the significance of Moses, representing the laws and Elija, representing the prophets and tied it back to Matthew 5:17-20.

We had great discussion about why the disciples could not drive the demon out of the little boy. We also studied the following:

- Parable of the Wandering Sheep
- Dealing With Sin in the Church
- The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant

Please feel free to join us every Wednesday night from 6:30 - 7:30. Thanks to all the participants and the great insight and open discussion!
