Good morning, friends!
Relationships are some of our greatest teachers. Through them, we learn not only about others but also about ourselves, our responses, our attitudes, and our level of spiritual maturity. They challenge us to grow in our submission to God and to those He has placed in authority, while also strengthening our walk with Christ.
Whether in marriage, family, professional settings, or friendships, relationships can be difficult. They often require us to navigate the emotions, attitudes, and behaviors of others while managing our own. At times, there is an unspoken expectation that we should “just take it”—accept what is said or done without response—because it is perceived as the right or godly thing to do.
However, “just taking it” without properly releasing those offenses and experiences can quietly grow into bitterness, resentment, and even malice. We are reminded in scripture that we must surrender those offenses to God and trust He will judge righteously and will make all things right. This surrender is what enabled Jesus to endure suffering with humility and grace.
I can recall moments when remaining silent and submissive made me feel weak and like a coward. However, there have also been times when I spoke up, shared my frustrations, and was immediately convicted, realizing that these emotions were fleshly, not from truth. True strength and submission are found in obeying the word of God, even when it is uncomfortable.
I am reminded of the contrasting examples of Queen Vashti and Esther in the book of Esther. Vashti’s pride and disobedience led to her removal as queen. In contrast, Esther’s humility, obedience, and courage positioned her to save an entire people. Her willingness to submit to God’s purpose, even at great personal risk, demonstrates the power of godly character in action.
Relationships, healthy and challenging ones, can teach us obedience, cooperation, humility, and reverence, as our character is refined and our dependence on God grows. When our responses to others align with the will of God, our actions have the power to bring healing to ourselves and those connected to us.
