Ministry Spotlight: Lifting Hands

"Rick and Pat Peacock founded Lifting Hands ministry to provide support and encouragement to missionaries on the field. , Missionaries are on the front lines of a spiritual battle fighting for the souls of people around the globe. In their work of sharing the love of Christ and discipling new believers, missionaries can feel alone and become discouraged. Based on Exodus 17:12-13, Rick and Pat come alongside as advocates, essentially lifting up their hands so the missionaries can stay the course and the battle can be won. Rick also serves as the Director of Outreach for Reynolda Church in Winston-Salem, NC.

Update from their recent trip to Malawi:

Thank you for your prayers, gifts, and support for our mission trip to work with Pastor Stephen Banda in Malawi. Our team consisted of Chuck and Janelle Siebsen (Reynolda Clemmons campus), Wes Tuttle (Mission Pastor of River Oaks Community Church) and us.

Our goal was to bring encouragement to Pastor Stephen Banda, the many pastors in his denomination and the church in general. We visited 6 churches and a school during our 7 days in Malawi, with two days to travel to and from the capital of Lilongwe to Blantyre, a major city in the South. We were received by our brothers and sisters in Malawi, which truly is the "warm heart" of Africa.

After an extended time of singing and worship, our team was next on the schedule. Here is how our part of the service typically went:
Pastor Wes would normally bring a greeting and sometimes open in song.
Chuck would then tell the story of Gideon while Janelle displayed pictures of the story. Rick would share the lessons from the story of Gideon for that particular church, such as prayer, trusting God, depending upon the power of the Spirit, denying false gods, etc. Pat would share words and scripture that God put on her heart.
Janelle would give her testimony. Wes would summarize and give the final words of encouragement. The people appreciated the effort it took for us to be there and we were mutually encouraged.

We are so thankful for those who helped support the trip financially or with gifts to take.

River Oaks donated $2500 for Bibles, which were handed out at each service to those designated by the pastors to receive one. Many of you donated reading glasses, which were greatly appreciated for those whose eyes can no longer see up close. Soccer balls were donated as well and were a big hit with the youth. Candy was given to the children.

Even though the Malawi people have very few material goods compared to American standards, we saw a great spiritual maturity. We sensed that God is raising up the churches of Malawi to be missionaries to the world."

Brazil Trip Recap: Ronald Gray and Jack Turner

"Jack Turner and I had a wonderful trip to Balneario Camboriu, Brazil. We visited Moises Gonzales and his family. They were able to go there from Cuba three years ago. God is blessing Moises with many opportunities to share the Gospel. Moises graduated from the Cuba Ministry Training Institute. We spoke at two churches, at a March for Jesus rally and a men’s meeting. We even got to be interviewed on tv at the March for Jesus! Many people were touched and healed during our visit. Thank God for open doors and the presence of the Holy Spirit!"

Trip Summary: Cory Houston

"It was a true joy and privilege to serve alongside Ever and Gladis Dakin with "Aaron's Mission & Outreach". Their love for the people of Honduras and their unwavering commitment to sharing the Gospel is evident in everything they do. We are grateful for their hospitality, leadership, and faithful example of serving Christ.

Our team of five was blessed with incredible opportunities to be the hands and feet of Jesus throughout the week. We had the privilege of feeding children and praying with them at two different schools, sharing the love of Christ through both words and actions. We also traveled into the mountains, where we prayed with families, provided food, and encouraged them with the hope found in Jesus Christ.

Our team was able to serve the missionaries by painting rooms and the front of their home, helping strengthen the place they use to minister to others. We were also honored to preach the Word of God, trusting that His Word will continue to bear fruit long after we have returned home.

One of the greatest blessings of the trip was seeing how God worked uniquely in each member of our team. Although we served together, the Lord spoke to each of us in different ways, teaching us, stretching our faith, and revealing more of His heart. We returned home not only thankful for the opportunity to serve but also changed by what God did in our own lives.

"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations..." — Matthew 28:19

To God alone be the glory."

Meet two of our IOM missionaries, Chris and Laura Christensen!

Chris and Laura Christensen are the founders of the music group Exo, which has swept across the French-speaking world with a wave of joyful praise and deep worship through their songs and concerts. Pioneers in the development of worship music for the Church, they have become a model and an inspiration to many.

Chris was born in the United States but, as the son and grandson of Protestant missionaries, grew up in South Africa. He discovered a passion for music at a very young age; he learned to play the guitar and began writing songs. He earned a music degree from the Wheaton College Conservatory (Chicago) and dedicated his life to composition, writing lyrics in both French and English and performing his songs worldwide. He draws inspiration from his sensitivity to life’s beauty and suffering, and from listening to the gentle breath of the Creator God, who stirs songs of love within him.

Laura was born and raised in the United States. As the daughter of a career military officer, she spent her childhood in many different places. Since childhood—alongside music and dance—she has loved sewing and various other activities, constantly developing them creatively to express beauty. She earned a music degree from the Wheaton College Conservatory, where she and Chris met. She is a mother of four and has three grandchildren, all of whom have inherited her love for life. She has recently developed her own style of "watercolor patchwork."

In 1987, Chris and Laura felt called to leave the United States for Europe. The Exo ministry was born from a vision of a people—young and old, Protestant and Catholic, charismatic and non-charismatic—gathered as one body in an expression of magnificent worship. In 1989, Chris and Laura Christensen met the Swiss lyricist Thierry Ostrini. Chris and Thierry began writing songs together. In 1995, the dream of releasing a CD became a reality with the birth of the first album in the *Eclats* series. *Eclats 2* (Paris), *Eclats 3* (Lausanne), and *Eclats 4* (Antilles) followed.

A few years later, *Eclats 5* was recorded in Brussels just as the group reached a major crossroads. Thierry Ostrini felt a desire to pursue new directions. Since Exo was more than just a band, Chris and Laura continued to carry out their vision. The final CD in the series, *Eclats d’Afrique*, was recorded in Côte d’Ivoire during a time when the country was being shaken by war. Chris was inspired to write all the songs for this album; several of them had a profound impact on the Ivorian people.

In recent years, Chris and Laura have stepped back to seek new sources of inspiration. The new Exo CD, *The Way*, is set for release in March 2017. It features fifteen poignant, original tracks centered on the Passion of Christ—taking the listener from the Garden of Gethsemane to the Resurrection—offering a journey through the Stations of the Cross unlike any seen or experienced before. The CD release coincides with a tour across France. Other projects are currently in the works, including a new addition to the *Eclats* series and the recording of more intimate songs.

Exo’s success cannot be reduced to a man-made formula. Exo is more than just a group of talented musicians. Musical bands come and go and change over time, but a vision received from God endures. Chris and Laura remain dedicated to that original—and fundamentally simple—dream: to sing, and to lead others in song, so that the glory of God may shine forth. In Greek, *Exo* means "outside of," and for them, it is crucial to understand that while worship is something personal—and sometimes private—it also needs to be expressed publicly, outside the four walls of the church.

"He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in God."
(Psalm 40:4)

Their music can be found on YouTube and all listening and download platforms like Spotify, Amazon Music, Google play, etc. by searching Chris Christensen for English and Exo Eclats for French.

Chris and Laura also run an Airbnb in the south of France and welcome visitors!

We are so glad to have Chris and Laura as a part of our IOM family!

IOM Missionary Spotlight- Alli Mellon

Alli Mellon is a long term associate of IOM, serving as founding director of the Hard Places Community. The Hard Places Community (HPC) works against child s*x**l exploitation, primarily with children between the ages of 3 and 14, as well as adult male and female survivors of the commercial s*x trade.

HPC’s work began in Cambodia. With all credit to the Father, their first anti-trafficking base is going strong after 17.5 years, and the Mellon family call Cambodia “home.” HPC has launched two successful, growing bases in California, India and Greece, and has new, developing bases in Madagascar and Indonesia.

Alli is single and has five children, all adopted as newborns from Cambodia. The Mellon children range in age from 7.5 to 17, and get excited about starting college next year (Bella, 17), reading (Anna Claire, almost 17), SPORTS, sports, sports (Nash, 13), art (Nadia, 12) and airplanes (Scotty, 7.5).
