IOM Ministry Spotlight: Hope Reforged

"Every person who is a disciple of Christ is a leader, since we are representing Him and His Kingdom. But what happens when deep brokenness becomes a noose or bo***ge that invalidates the leaders’ impact? We’ve seen many examples of leadership failures in the Church as a whole.

Hope Reforged: A beacon of hope illuminating the path from the darkness of po*******hy addiction to a united marriage.

Our personal story began with tragedy in our lives from a po*******hy addiction. Chris’ confession allowed the possibility of freedom in his life and opened a way for the marriage to be restored. For over 20 years, we’ve dedicated time to discipling leaders, who want to live a life pleasing to the Lord. We have dedicated helping others succeed in their journey to freedom and fortitude.

Planning the 16 episodes of the Hope Reforged podcast resulted in highly authentic conversations, discussing if marriages can survive such a betrayal, and pointing out the dangers of po*******hy, facts about the exposure children are experiencing, but also how every single person on the planet can be restored to our Heavenly Father, leading us to health and freedom. Our podcast continues to be visited by desperate individuals around the world, and we are honored to provide our testimony as a light in dark places.

Most recent Hope Reforged action: Angela is currently working on resources for the wife who has been betrayed. This is an intimate and raw project that digs so deep, it’s sometimes a challenge just to pick up the pen! We have people praying with us for this project, as the completion will bring Jesus to the forefront to countless women who are carrying the heavy burden of betrayal and need to know they are not alone, but are perfectly loved."

Kenya Mission Update- Austin Smith

Hey guys,

I wanted to take a moment to share just a glimpse of what God did during our time in Kenya. We saw lives transformed, leaders strengthened, and the love of the Father move in ways that are hard to put into words.

Before anything else, I want to say thank you. This didn’t happen without you. Because of your prayers and your financial support, we were able to step into what God was doing on the ground. You were a part of every life touched, every leader encouraged, and every moment of breakthrough—we are deeply grateful.

Because of that, I’m excited to invite you into something that is growing out of these moments: The Beloved Initiative. I’ve put together a full newsletter that shares more of what God did in Kenya and where we believe He is leading next—especially as we begin expanding this message of beloved identity into prisons around the world. Please see the attached newsletter.

Thank you for standing with me, praying, and believing in what God is doing. This is just the beginning.

With love and gratitude,
Austin Smith

Welcome IOM Associate Jak Varnado – Director of Team 144

BLESSED BE THE LORD, MY ROCK, WHO TRAINS MY HANDS FOR WAR, AND MY FINGERS FOR BATTLE - PSALMS 144:1

Team 144 is thrilled to announce an exciting new chapter in our journey: Jak Varnado has officially been named the new Director of Team 144! After years of unwavering dedication, development, and leadership, Pastor Higgason is faithfully passing the torch to a man he has trained, trusted, and served alongside for years. We celebrate Pastor Higgason’s legacy and look forward with anticipation as Jak leads us into this next season.

Jak is affectionately known as the “Swiss Army Knife” of Team 144—and for good reason. Whether it’s martial arts instruction, troubleshooting equipment, or lightening the mood with a well-timed board game, Jak consistently shows up with a tool in hand, a solution on standby, and a servant’s heart. His presence is both steady and inspiring.

With over 30 years of martial arts experience and a long list of certifications, Jak brings not only skill but seasoned wisdom to our team. His professional journey began as a firefighter and eventually led him into law enforcement, where he rose through the ranks—from patrolman to Lieutenant at the Training Academy. He has served in nearly every capacity, earning the respect of both colleagues and community members.

Meet Angela M. Bednarczyk, Ph.D.!

Angela M. Bednarczyk, Ph.D. has worked with deaf children for the past 25 years. As a teacher, she has worked with elementary-aged children in both public and day programs for deaf children, most recently at Kendall Demonstration Elementary School. In addition to teaching, she has been a program supervisor, also at Kendall School. In that capacity, she supervised teachers and children's programs from birth to age 9.

In addition to these responsibilities, Dr. Bednarczyk has written the s*x education textbook, Growing Up Sexually, co-authored Access for All: Integrating Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Hearing Preschoolers, Issues in Access: Creating Effective Preschools for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Hearing Children, and created two sign language books for young children. An accomplished presenter, she has developed workshops for national
conventions, local meetings, parent groups, and school personnel. She also served on the management team to implement two grants, one to develop a model for integrating deaf and hearing preschoolers, and the other to work with programs across the country desiring to implement the model.

For 10 years, she was a software designer for Paws Signs Stories, ASL Tales and Games for Kids, ASL Songs for Kids, Con-SIGN-tration, ASL Clip and Create, and other software products as Creative Director at the Institute for Disabilities Research and Training.

For the past 15 years, Dr. Bednarczyk has been a curriculum specialist and teacher trainer at schools for the Deaf in Senegal, currently working at Ecole Baptiste Dund-Gides Sourds. There, she is providing not only instructional strategies, but many materials for the schools to use in an effort to establish a more comprehensive and visual educational program for the deaf children.

Dr. Bednarczyk received a BA in Psychology from Lycoming College, an MA from Gallaudet University in Deaf Education, and a Ph.D. in Learning Disabilities from the University of Maryland. Her dissertation research focused on teaching story grammar information through a strategy instruction approach, to children with reading disabilities.

We are so glad to have Dr. Bednarczyk as a part of our IOM family!

Please join us in welcoming Katie Lineburg to the IOM family!

Katie has a heart for inner city Portland and desires to see the city full of the love, healing, and light of Christ. She has felt a call to missions on her life since age 4, but never imagined that this call would lead her to minister to the very city she grew up in. Through cultivating relationships and creating space for people to encounter the presence, peace, and love of God, Katie is believing that the hopeless will find hope, the broken will find healing, and the lost will be found.

Ministry Spotlight- Punlok Thmey Men (PTM)

"Punlok Thmey Men (PTM) is a community program based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia that walks alongside men who are rebuilding their lives that have experienced exploitation and vulnerability.

Through vocational training, mentorship, and supportive community, PTM helps men develop practical skills, regain confidence, and move toward sustainable employment and healthy relationships. One of the program’s central initiatives, PTM Barber Academy, equips participants with professional barbering skills while also encouraging personal growth, emotional resilience, and leadership.

PTM’s work is rooted in a faith-inspired belief that every person is created with dignity, value, and the capacity for restoration. While participants come from many different backgrounds, the program seeks to reflect the compassion, grace, and hope found in the teachings of Jesus by creating a space where men can rediscover their worth and begin building a new future.

One of our students said this recently.

“When I first started, I was nervous. Now I believe I can build a future with my own hands.” -PTM Barber Academy student"
