This page was created as a volunteer project at the request of the cemetery board when they were seeking votes for the millage. After that, despite my requests for someone to take over or help me maintain it, I was no longer fed information in order to keep this page updated. There is another fb page operated by Michael Snyder that is up to date. I'm suggesting everyone who follows this page switch to his page as I'm planning to discontinue this page in the near future.

As of yesterday they were getting the uprooted tree all cleaned up. It looked like any damage was minimal.

Driving by this morning, I saw a hug pine tree uprooted in the cemetery. I hope it didn't break any headstones!

The Hastings City Council has agreed to place a millage proposal to operate the cemetery before Hastings City voters on May 7, 2013. The proposal is that a one mill increase allowing for the operation of Riverside Cemetery be approved. However, some concerned citizens have organized a Cemetery Action Group to raise funds through the Barry Community Foundation and in cooperation with the Hastings City Council and an advisory board, to build a permanent endowment that is planned to reduce the proposed one mill levy to zero in the future. Approval of the millage proposal will enable the City of Hastings to take ownership of Riverside Cemetery and provide funds for maintenance costs and capital improvement projects until the permanent endowment fund will cover those expenses.

Despite the long history of Riverside Cemetery being a non-tax supported cemetery, increasing operational costs, declining revenue, and a declining return on investments make it impossible for the Riverside Cemetery Company to continue operating the cemetery. This situation has resulted in the Hastings City Council agreeing to place a millage proposal to operate the cemetery before Hastings City voters on May 7, 2013.

The Memorial Day Parade is scheduled to end at Riverside Cemetery once again this year. Wouldn't it be sad if that was the end of such a tradition of honor? Please help spread the word to help save the cemetery today!

If this millage proposal is not passed & the City of Hastings doesn’t take ownership of Riverside Cemetery, it will lose the authority to conduct burials, even for those persons already owning gravesites, and there will be no provisions for maintenance.
