O Holy Spirit, enter in,
And in our hearts Your work begin,
Your dwelling place now make us.
Sun of the soul, O Light divine,
Around and in us brightly shine,
To joy and gladness wake us
That we may be
Truly living,
To You giving
Prayer unceasing
And in love be still increasing.
(Lutheran Service Book 913:1. Text: Michael Schirmer, 1606–73, adapt.; tr. Catherine Winkworth, 1827–78, alt. Text: Public domain)
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the
Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the
Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him
nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
(St. John 14:15-17 ESV)
“He dwells with you and will be in you.” Thanks be to God for the Holy Spirit who knows us, dwells in us, and is with us. Baptized into the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, the blessings of Jesus’ saving work on the cross and His resurrection are gifted to us by the Holy Spirit. We eat Christ’s body and drink His blood and, by His Spirit, receive the benefits of the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation in the Holy Eucharist.
With us forever, the world does not acknowledge the Spirit, but, by God’s grace, we do as the Church. With love “still increasing,” we live prayerful lives of service in God’s might, power, and mercy all by the power and grace of the Holy Spirit. Lives are transformed. Systems are reformed. Communities are reborn.
The Spirit’s work continues in us. The Spirit’s work continues among us. The Spirit’s work continues through us so that the world may know Jesus and His grace, peace, and love. The Spirit causes us to abide in hope as we look to the day of Christ’s return in glory. “He dwells with you and will be in you.”
Thanks be to God for what the Lord has done. Thanks be to God for what He is doing. Thanks be to God for what He is going to do. I am praying for you and with you so that, in love “still increasing,” we may bring the Lord’s indomitable joy and death-defying gladness to those around us.
A blessed Pentecost to you. The Lord bless you and keep you.
Peace and hope in Christ Jesus,
Bishop Taylor
