What Is Faith?

Many people think faith is simply making a decision to believe in God.

The Bible describes faith differently.

Faith is trusting in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and the gift of eternal life. It is confidence not in ourselves, but in what Christ has done for us through His life, death, and resurrection.

But where does that faith come from?

The Gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins and rose again. As that Gospel is proclaimed, the Holy Spirit is at work, creating faith in the hearts of those who hear.

Faith is not something we produce by our own reason or strength. It is God’s gracious gift.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.” — Ephesians 2:8–9

Jesus Himself teaches that those who become children of God are born not by human will, but by God.

”…who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” — John 1:12–13

God sincerely desires all people to be saved, and through His Word He offers the forgiveness of sins won by Christ.

Yet the Holy Spirit works through means that can be resisted. Some hear the Gospel and reject the forgiveness that God freely offers.

Faith is not about how strongly we believe.

Faith is receiving the gift that God freely gives in Jesus Christ.

Through faith, our sins are forgiven, our relationship with God is restored, and we have the sure hope of eternal life.

“Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” — Romans 10:17

Why Did Jesus Have to Die?

If God is loving, why couldn’t He simply forgive our sins?

Because God is not only loving—He is also holy and just.

God’s justice demands that sin be punished.

“For the wages of sin is death…” — Romans 6:23

From the moment sin entered the world through Adam, death became the consequence of sin. Every one of us stands guilty before a holy God, and no amount of good works can erase that guilt.

That is why Jesus came.

Jesus Christ lived the perfect life that we have failed to live. Though He was without sin, He willingly took our place on the cross.

The punishment that belonged to us was laid upon Him.

“He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities… and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” — Isaiah 53:5–6

On the cross, Jesus satisfied God’s justice and demonstrated God’s love at the same time.

Justice was not ignored.

It was fulfilled.

Love was not merely spoken.

It was demonstrated.

Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead, proving that sin, death, and the grave had been conquered.

Because Christ lives, all who trust in Him have the forgiveness of sins and the promise of eternal life.

Jesus did not die as a tragic example.

He died as the Savior of the world.

“God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8

✨The Transfiguration of Our Lord ✨

1 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.

2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.

3 And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.

4 And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.”

5 He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”

6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified.

7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.”

8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

9 And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.”

10 And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?”
Matt 17: 1-10

Now on the mountain of Transfiguration, Moses and Elijah discussed with Jesus his Exodus — his departure. As Moses led Israel through the Red Sea to freedom, Jesus would bring us all through death to everlasting life by his death on the cross.

The message of Transfiguration is that Jesus is God, yet He set aside His glory to die for our sins. We should serve God by doing what He says and serving one another.

What Is Sin?

Many people think sin is simply “breaking the rules.”

The Bible teaches something deeper.

Sin is anything that is contrary to God’s holy will. It is not only what we do, but also what we think, what we say, and even the condition of our hearts.

After Adam and Eve fell into sin, every person inherited a sinful nature.

David writes,

“Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.” — Psalm 51:5

This is why we don’t have to teach children to lie, be selfish, or disobey. Those things come naturally because our sinful nature is with us from birth.

Jesus said the problem isn’t merely our behavior—it is our heart.

“Out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.” — Matthew 15:19

Because our nature is sinful, our thoughts, words, and actions fall short of God’s perfect standard.

God’s Law, summarized in the Ten Commandments, reveals His holy will. Rather than proving our goodness, the Law exposes our sin and our need for a Savior.

Sin separates us from God.

That is the bad news.

The Good News is that God did not leave us in our sin. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to forgive sinners and restore us to Himself.

That is why the Gospel is such wonderful news.
