Sermon: “Trading Envy for Joy”

Our reading in Romans reminds us of the Ten Commandments found in Exodus 20, including the tenth commandment in Exodus 20:17: "You shall not covet your neighbor's house... nor anything that is your neighbor's". In the Bible, to covet means to have a strong, unhealthy desire for something that belongs to someone else. We don’t use the word “covet” much in our current society, but we each are still highly negatively impacted by the act of covetousness. It signals a lack of trust in God’s provision, and that steals our joy!

Worship: Sunday, August 23rd at 10 a.m.
Sermon: "Persistence"

Many in the Christian tradition have closed the Prayer of Jesus with the phrase “for thine (or yours) is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.” The power Jesus spoke of and that the early Christians invoked made the powerful of the world nervous because it expressed a confidence that ultimately the world is in God’s hands, not the powers of the principalities. As we close this worship series on prayer, we draw on the habit of prayer practices we have experienced to take us throughout “all our days” trusting that God and God’s kin-dom, power, and glory is always as near to us as the beads in our hands.

We hope you join us in the sanctuary tomorrow or via the livestream as we continue our line by line analysis of "The Lord's Prayer" and tackle the complex and important topic of forgiveness and pardon. Some quotes upon which to reflect in preparation:

"And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors" - Matthew 6:12

"Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other;
as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive." - Colossians 3:13

"Forgiveness is not an occasional act; it is a constant attitude." — Martin Luther King Jr.

"To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you." — Lewis B. Smedes

"Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future." — Paul Boese

Worship: Sunday, August 9th at 10 a.m.
Sermon: "Pardon"

Jesus included a line about forgiveness in the prayer he taught his disciples because getting right with each other is essential for our personal and communal wellbeing. Right relationship involves getting honest with God and with each other. Sometimes our prayers can simply be to let go of the resentment we feel and ask God to help us stop hurting others.
