A MESSAGE FROM FR. KAJ

Our faith is about much more than simply, “believing in” Jesus as a compelling teacher or leader — though he certainly was both. We experience Jesus by taking his very life upon and into ourselves. We do this in part by way of our communion with him in our participation in the Eucharist.

When we “eat” something, we transform what we are eating into something else independently of us and outside of us - it nourishes us and gives us renewed life and energy. What Jesus is for us is ... food. Drink. Jesus is here to change us. Jesus is here to transform us. But to be transformed by him, we have to trust him enough to take him into ourselves the way we take in food and drink. For his eternal life, his “God-life” among us to work upon us and in us, we have to “eat” him and “drink” him. Jesus is, for us, bread. He is for us wine. He is for us life.

We can take upon us and within us his very life, his flesh and his blood. We can wrap ourselves around him, we can take him into ourselves and be transformed, day after day after day, our lives becoming physically and spiritually renewed, through communing with him as often as we will. We can believe that. We do believe that.

Jesus is here! We are in His presence! We do come forward and take his very life upon us and into us! Yes, we do that! Yes, we did that! We are taking his very life upon us and within us. We can believe that. In believing that, we don’t let it end here, in this house of worship.

We will take his life upon ourselves, within ourselves. Let us take his life out there, into the world, a suffering world, a world burdened with hunger and want, with wars and rumors of war, with poverty and racism. May we take the life of Jesus upon ourselves and take that life out there into the world of sin. May we be an offering, as he was an offering, an offering of healing, an offering of new life in the face of encroaching death.

With this bread and with this cup, we take his life and his sacrificial death and his new life upon ourselves and into ourselves. Where will we go from here? Amen.

My dear parishioners - Happy Feast Day! This parish community truly embodies the Body and Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Your dedication to the eucharist is a powerful message of your love and devotion to our faith. You know the true presence of the eucharist. Thank you to all who volunteered this weekend as Adorers. All are invited and encouraged to join the procession after the 12nn Mass in celebrating the Feast of Corpus Christi.

Please join us next Sunday for our America 250 celebration. Great music, food and fellowship for our country’s 250th Anniversary. Bring a lawn chair. Tickets must be purchased by Thursday, June 11.

Let us continue to pray for all those affected by war and violence, natural disaster, for one another, our country, parish community and for peace in the world.

God Bless,
Fr. Kaj

THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

When I was a young altar server, I once overheard two very different comments about the Eucharist. One person asked, “Is Father distributing the bread or the wine?” Later, another asked, “Can you go get Jesus from the tabernacle?” Same parish, same Mass, but two very different ways of speaking. I pondered: So, is it bread that we pretend is Jesus? Or is Jesus a tiny white thing in a box? I was utterly confused.

This Feast of Corpus Christi is an excellent time to think about how we should speak about the Eucharist. In today’s Gospel, Jesus declares: “My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.” (John 6:55) His words scandalized his listeners, who feared cannibalism, and even today puzzle many, who reduce them to metaphor. Both miss the truth.

The Church gives us better words that honor Jesus’ words in the Gospel. After the consecration, we do not call it “bread” or “wine.” Nor do we say, “a piece of Jesus” or even “Jesus.” We say: the Eucharist. We say: the Body and Blood of Christ. We say: the Real Presence. We say: the Most Blessed Sacrament. These words safeguard the astonishing reality that Christ himself is truly present, whole and entire, under the appearances of bread and wine.

If we speak well about the Eucharist, we will think more clearly and believe more deeply. And if we believe more deeply, we will adore more truly the One who gives himself to us - not bread, not wine, but Jesus Christ himself, whole and entire.
