Village Quilters was established in 1983 by Cindy Schultz, owner of the Village Peddlar quilt shop (now closed). The group was formed as a spin-off of sampler classes offered at the at the quilt shop in Harvard Il Members of the classes wanted to continue working on their quilt projects after classes ended. The first meeting places were located in the basements of the First State Bank of Harvard, and the Harvard public library. Members met to sew, help each other and have light refreshments. As the group grew, it was decided to organize a guild. The name for the Guild was created by Margaret Kistler. She thought β€œVillage” should be in the name as the group originated at the Village Peddler.

Our program on the Underground Railroad was very interesting. Eleanor Station quilted the sampler quilt of quilt codes used in the flight to freedom. Eleanor and Helen Brugger gave an explanation of each block's secret message. Gloria VanHof and Pamela Althoff gave a wonderful presentation on the Underground Railroad in McHenry County and the safe houses history in our county.
