Lutheran Services Carolinas (LSC) recently received a donation from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for the communities of Columbia, Charleston, Greenville, Clemson, Spartanburg and Myrtle Beach. The Church and LSC are working together to support refugee families as they rebuild their lives in South Carolina. Through this joint effort, LSC’s New Americans Program is providing emergency assistance and legal services to hundreds of individuals and families seeking stability, safety, and a fresh start.

Refugees receiving help through this initiative benefit from temporary housing assistance, food, medical support, and legal help with green cards, work authorization, and U.S. citizenship—vital steps on the path to self-reliance.

“This support will directly change the lives of hundreds of New Americans,” said Seth Hershberger, LSC’s New Americans South Carolina State Director. “It allows us to respond quickly to urgent needs like rent, groceries, and medical expenses, and to offer the legal guidance needed for long-term security. We are deeply grateful for this opportunity to work with the Church of Jesus Christ, and for the sense of joy and compassion this work brings to all who are involved."

LSC has a longstanding mission to help newcomers thrive through compassionate case management, legal aid, and the dedicated efforts of volunteers.

Elder David Winters, a regional leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in South Carolina, said, “As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to love and lift those around us. We are honored to support the impactful work of Lutheran Services Carolinas in blessing the lives of our new neighbors. This collaboration is a sacred opportunity to reflect the Savior’s love through meaningful service.”

This effort reflects a shared commitment to welcoming the stranger and easing burdens with dignity and care. Together, LSC and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are helping families move forward with hope, purpose, and the tools needed to thrive.

Sarah Lewis, the outreach coordinator for LSC said, “This family of five came to Columbia, SC as refugees about two years ago. The family received critical assistance from Lutheran Services New Americans Program in their initial resettlement and have received ongoing services throughout their time in Columbia. Despite numerous challenges, they worked hard to learn English and save up for necessities like a car. Their gracious demeanor and willingness to try new things has endeared them to everyone they meet. LSC’ s School Impact Program connected their children to opportunities for extracurricular education and socialization; their children cherished these programs and were grateful for every connection. This family has experienced deep hardship, but their determination to build a new life, while remaining kind and grateful, has been an inspiration. LSC’s New Americans team is grateful for the chance to serve refugee families and rejoice in watching our clients build a new life in America, just as so many have done before them, throughout our nation’s history. We’re grateful for the partnership of community members, churches, and businesses who invest in this beautiful work of welcome.”

An exciting announcement today about the future Open House for the Salt Lake Temple!

On February 14, 1853, a groundbreaking ceremony in Salt Lake City began a 40-year journey of faith and sacrifice, culminating in the dedication of the Salt Lake Temple in 1893.

A current and comprehensive renovation to strengthen this sacred house of the Lord for future generations is now nearing completion.

Today, exactly 172 years after the groundbreaking ceremony, I am delighted to announce that the temple will reopen for tours during a public open house from April 2027 to October 2027.

We warmly invite our friends to come and learn about God's plan for His children and rejoice in the love of Jesus Christ. Details about this event will be shared as April 2027 approaches.

As houses of the Lord now dot the earth, I invite you to cherish your time and service at the temples closest to you as we prepare for the reopening of the Salt Lake Temple in 2027.

Last weekend we had 59 members from the Hartsville Stake serve in Augusta, Georgia for disaster cleanup from Hurricane Helene. One of our cleanup teams was requested to assist with Yasha Hutko’s home which had 20 trees fall from the storm. Yasha had just learned that to clear these trees it would cost between $15,000-$22,000. Then the cleanup crew showed up! Seventy-seven year-old Yasha was pulling brush along with the rest of us, despite several people telling her to rest. She replied “how can I when everyone else is doing this?” Her son let it slip to Brother Ben Connell and Sister Stephanie Miskin that it was Yasha’s birthday. The group decided it would be fun to get her a birthday cupcake, candles and sing Happy Birthday to her. She was a bit overwhelmed and humbled by the service and couldn’t thank us enough. Yasha was feeling alone and forgotten and this act of love reminded her that God loves her.
