Notes from the desk of Feeding Families of AL:
I get texts, messages, emails all the time letting me know that many people believe giving out expired foods from our food pantry should be okay. (Their opinion, not mine. )
There are many reasons we DON’T give out expired foods.
But one of the best reasons I can tell you is that, as a Christian, it would be so very wrong. (That IS my opinion. )
In the Bible, Matthew 25:40 says:
And the King shall answer and say unto them, “Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it to one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”
Now I myself look at it this way… if Jesus came to my house for dinner, I certainly wouldn’t go through my cabinets and pick out the out-dated, expired, or ruined foods to cook and serve to Him, thinking “well, if he’s truly hungry, he will eat it!”
Nope, I’d be picking out the very best of all I had, and I’d be happy to do without a fancy meal myself, to serve him the very best I could.
And if that’s what I’m doing for the poor, for those in need…giving them the worst of what I’ve got and hoarding the best for myself? The Bible clearly tells me I’m not just doing that to the needy, I’m doing it to Jesus Himself.
I don’t know about everyone else, you certainly have a right to believe as you wish. But I’m not willing to do that.
This isn’t a debate post. This is simply an explanation post.
People ask why we do some of the things we do here when everyone else tends to do things differently.
This is just one of the many questions we hear on a regular basis. And the answer to that question.
