"I Believe..." in the holy catholic Church.

Why do we affirm, every week, across traditions, believe in the holy "catholic" church? Well, we use it in the original meaning: "universal, composed of all bodies and members." When we affirm believe that there is one church of Jesus Christ, holy and "catholic," we are affirming that we have unity with our brothers and sisters in Christ through the real and powerful presence of our Advocate, the Holy Spirit.

"I believe..." that he sitteth at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

Despite the best efforts of people the world over, it seems like this life just bends towards injustice. The guilty so often go without facing justice. Those with the power to silence or distract remain unaccountable. The innocent can be wrongly condemned. In all of this, where is justice? Where is God?

This week we continue through the Creed and hit a point that answers these questions: justice will not remain absent forever, and sins do not go unanswered. Jesus, risen and ascended, sits at the right hand of God and shall judge all. No one, regardless of power, authority, or trickery, can stop the bell from tolling and standing before God.

Let us learn ever more how to forgive, so that we do not, even accidentally, usurp Jesus' divine role to judge.

Thank you to everyone who came out and made last Sunday the special day it was! We had a wonderful combined worship service and fellowship lunch together with fellow charge-church Moss Chapel UMC!

Additional thanks to Alan Head, superintendent of the Mid-Central district, for continuing to support this ministry with his presence and engagement here as well!

Also, personally from pastor Trent: I am so impressed by the turnout. It was a wonderful event beyond anything I had hoped for, and that’s only possible because of the faithful Christians populating these churches. Thank you for the wonderful day, and we will look forward to regular 5th Sunday collaborations in the future!

"I believe..." that he suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried.

This seems like an obvious historical fact, and yet we reaffirm belief in it every Sunday. Why? Why is Jesus' suffering and death so important?

Because, when suffering is taken away, not only do we cast aside overwhelming scriptural testimony, we also lose Jesus as a human brother and horribly cheapen the very real sacrifice of Jesus! The reality of suffering is where we most powerfully find common humanity in Christ, and know he loves us through sacrifice.
