The Baptist had sent a delegation to Jesus to find out if he was really the coming Messiah or would they “look for another?” He must have been happy with the reply. Jesus did not answer yes or no. Words would not do for such a question. Jesus told John's delegation “to report to John what you hear and see.”

Not only would we do everything in our power to respond to all the suffering around us and in the world at large, but we would likewise devote our best efforts to eliminating the root causes of so much unhappiness.

“Master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

Our questions can have many meanings. Sometimes we question
(challenge) authority or we question (doubt) another’s sincerity or we question (inquire about) a motive. Sometimes a question is a test and really an effort to confuse the other, as the lawyer was attempting to do to Jesus here. And sometimes a question is really a statement, like Jesus’s, “Which of these three was the real neighbor?” Jesus is saying that true Life is found in loving, and not in accumulating money or knowledge or by observing religious or social regulations.
