As the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Hartford, this beautiful church is the place where the local Archbishop presides over services attended by Catholics from throughout the Archdiocese. The Cathedral is also a parish in its own right, serving Catholics living in the Asylum Hill section of Hartford and in surrounding areas. We are blessed with a beautiful environment for worship, one which featu

res a superb four manual Austin pipe organ, exquisite stained glass windows crafted in Paris and a ceramic tile mural behind the altar that is the largest of its kind in the world. Even more importantly, the Cathedral parish, which includes parishioners born on every continent in the world, is a vital one offering many activities, a place where sacred music and social outreach play significant roles. ✨ Today is the day. ✨

Join us tonight at 7:00 PM at the Cathedral of St. Joseph for At the Foot of the Cross: A Lenten Choral Meditation.

This concert is free and open to the public.

At the heart of the program is Josef Gabriel Rheinberger’s deeply moving Stabat Mater, surrounded by sacred works of Allegri, Palestrina, Byrd, Monteverdi, and Stanford. Organ and strings will fill the Cathedral with music that leads us gently into Lent.

Performed by the Cathedral Schola Cantorum, with Cathedral Organist Jacob Dowgewicz, conducted by Dr. Gabriel Löfvall.

A remarkable story from music history: Allegri’s Miserere, also on the program, was once secret music of the Sistine Chapel. In 1770, a 14 year old Mozart heard it once and wrote it down entirely from memory.

This is more than a concert. It is an invitation to begin Lent with beauty, prayer, and reflection.

Begin Lent with music that speaks to the soul

Enter the sacred season with At the Foot of the Cross: A Lenten Choral Meditation, a First Friday tradition at the Cathedral of St. Joseph offering prayer, beauty, and deep reflection through sacred choral music.

At the heart of the program is Josef Gabriel Rheinberger’s profoundly moving Stabat Mater—a tender and reverent meditation on Mary’s sorrow at the Crucifixion, richly supported by organ and string ensemble, whose sonorities deepen the work’s emotional and spiritual power. Surrounding this centerpiece are timeless works by Allegri, Palestrina, Byrd, Monteverdi, and Stanford, tracing a spiritual journey from penitence to peace.

🎶 A remarkable story from music history: Gregorio Allegri’s famous Miserere—also featured in this concert—was once secret music of the Sistine Chapel, sung only during Holy Week and guarded so closely that copying it risked excommunication. In 1770, a 14-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart heard it on Good Friday and transcribed the entire piece from memory, earning admiration from the Pope rather than punishment.
