You are seen. You are loved. And the same God who created life itself is holding your heart securely, even in the places that still ache.”
Mother’s Day is one of those days that can carry both incredible beauty and incredible heartbreak, sometimes all at once. For some, it is filled with sticky little hands, handmade cards, breakfast in bed that may or may not involve dangerously overcooked toast, flowers picked straight from the yard with the confidence of a child who truly believes dandelions belong in royal gardens, and the sweet, exhausting, beautiful chaos of being called “Mom” over and over again. It is laughter, hugs, and the kind of love that somehow manages to be both overwhelming and sacred.
But for others, Mother’s Day can feel painfully heavy. It can be the ache of longing to become a mother while prayers seem unanswered. It can be the grief of miscarriage, where a child was loved deeply, even if the world never got the chance to know them. It can be the heartbreak of children already in Heaven, of empty arms, of due dates that passed quietly, of nursery dreams that never unfolded the way you hoped. For some, it may mean strained relationships, prodigal children, loss, infertility, or missing their own mother with an ache so deep it catches them off guard in the simplest moments. This day is not one-size-fits-all and I think that is important to remember.
Because while the world often packages Mother’s Day into flowers, cards, and polished celebrations, real life is often much more complicated. Real life carries both celebration and sorrow. Real life holds women who are rejoicing and women who are simply trying to make it through the day. And the beautiful thing is that God sees every single part of that.
Scripture is full of women who understood deep longing, heartbreak, waiting, and sacrifice. Sarah knew what it was to wait for God’s promise long after it seemed humanly possible. Hannah wept bitterly before the Lord because her heart ached for a child. Rachel knew longing so deep it consumed her thoughts. Elizabeth endured years of barrenness before God moved in His perfect timing. Mary, the mother of Jesus, experienced both the miracle of motherhood and the unimaginable pain of watching her Son suffer. The Bible never pretends these journeys are always easy, neat, or painless, but it does show something extraordinary over and over again: God meets women in every chapter.
Not just in the fulfilled prayers. Not just in the celebrations. Not just in the moments when everything finally makes sense. He meets them in the waiting, in the grief, in the heartbreak, in the uncertainty, and in the tears.
Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” Near. What a powerful word. Not distant. Not absent. Not unaware. Near. Near to the mother holding her baby. Near to the mother grieving one she never got to hold long enough. Near to the woman still praying for motherhood. Near to the woman carrying wounds no one else can see. Near to those grieving their mother. Near to the spiritual mothers, adoptive mothers, foster mothers, stepmothers, and every woman whose nurturing heart reflects the love of God.
So tomorrow, we celebrate mothers, but we also honor the women whose hearts may feel broken. We honor the women carrying invisible grief. We honor those with children in Heaven. We honor those waiting through infertility. We honor those walking difficult roads with their children. We honor those grieving mothers they have lost. We honor the women who love fiercely, even when their own hearts are breaking.
Because motherhood is far more than a simple title. It is sacrifice. It is strength. It is nurturing. It is endurance. It is heartbreak. It is fierce love. It is showing up over and over again, even when the road looks nothing like what you imagined.
And whether tomorrow feels joyful, painful, or like an exhausting mixture of both, know this: God sees you. El Roi, the God who sees, has never once lost sight of your heart. He sees every tear, every prayer, every longing, every wound, every memory, and every ounce of love you carry.
If tomorrow is filled with joy, praise God. If tomorrow hurts, He is still near. If tomorrow feels complicated, He is still faithful.
