We like to think, “I would NEVER worship a golden calf.”, but what if we’re already worshiping something else?

Maybe it’s comfort. Convenience. Success. Political power. Notoriety. Or even our own importance. The scary part isn’t recognizing idolatry in someone else. It’s realizing how easily I can build an altar in my own heart.

Two bears. 42 people. One of the strangest stories in the Bible.

In 2 Kings 2, Elisha is mocked by a group of young men, and then two bears come out of the woods and maul 42 of them.

Wait… WHAT?

If you’ve ever read that passage and thought, “Why in the world is that in the Bible?” you’re not alone.

In this message, “Liars, a Bald Guy & Bears...Oh My” we take a closer look at this difficult and often misunderstood story and discover what it teaches us about knowing the truth, recognizing the real enemy, and trusting the God who holds the victory.

We serve a God who can send fire from heaven, but He’s also the God who speaks in a whisper.

Sometimes we expect God to show up in the big, dramatic moments. But in 1 Kings 19, Elijah learns that God’s presence isn’t limited to the flashy moments. He is there in the small moments, the quiet moments, and the stillness.

God is just as powerful in the whisper as He is in the fire.

God meets us in our breakdowns!

In First Kings 19, Elijah was having a breakdown. After watching God perform a miracle on Mount Carmel, he runs for his life and asks for death.

God shows up for Elijah, not with condemnation or anger or shame, but with help and hope.

God shows up the same way for us. When we are burnt out, when we are overwhelmed, God shows up with grace and hope and restoration.

Turn to him in your breakdown.

Sometimes the situation hasn’t changed. Your perspective has.

As we grow in Christ, life doesn’t necessarily get easier. We learn to see God more clearly in the middle of our struggles, depend on Him more deeply, and trust Him when things don’t make sense.

What God has brought you through can change the way you see what you’re going through. If you’re facing a difficult season right now, don’t forget: God is still with you in the middle of it.
