What’s up…My name is Darby Crabtree. I’m 33 years old and I’m a recovering addict. So, where do I start? I had a great childhood. My grandparents pretty much raised me. But even as a child I was always fighting something called depression, but never really said anything about it.

When I was 18 I lost my father to cancer. I tried to hold myself together for my brother & sister. But after the funeral, my depression kicked in and I found myself at a party with friends and found out that pain pills really helped change the way I felt.
I threw away my chances to go to college and started running around with the wrong crowd. Over the next 10 years I found myself incarcerated almost 9 years out of the 10 over childish things.

So let me fast forward to the last year and half. Remember I said I deal with depression? Right at a year ago I was starting to get my life together when I went through a break up and my depression started to kick in because I never dealt with it. I used a very large amount at one time and found myself being Narcan'd and my brother that I work with coming to pull me out of where I was.

But the damage had already been done and my kidneys shut down. I had to be put on dialysis. After about 2 weeks of being on dialysis I was going through this hopeless feeling. I couldn’t get into a treatment center because I was considered a medical liability. My sponsor tried so hard to find me a place cause we both knew where I was headed. I remember telling him to just give up cause there was no hope of finding a place. The doctors told me if I was lucky my kidneys would come back working for a year.

Let me tell you this is how I know there is a God and I’m a believer that prayer works. My kidneys healed in a month. And my family from Isaiah House came running to bring me back into treatment. I owe my new life to these people. They seen something in me I never could and still can’t see. They really made me work for my recovery this time. And most of all have helped me with my depression cause I finally said I need help with this. The medical staff and my brother’s here have changed my life for the better.

Today I have my peer support license and I have gotten my certified drug and alcohol counselor associate license. I get to play softball with my co-workers who are my biggest supporters. Softball is a big part of my recovery. And I have a job in admissions that I love and a boss who pushes me every day to do better. Honestly I wouldn’t have it any other way. I get told all the time "it’s a miracle that you're here today". If this is my last chance to have a life, I’m not going to blow it. So I’m here to say that of the family I have here I wouldn’t change one person. And if I can get sober and finally enjoy my life then anyone can. You just have to surrender.
