A few weeks ago, my son, Casey taught an excellent Sunday School lesson on the 10 Virgins. We had a great discussion that led me to continue studying this parable during my own devotional time.
If you aren't familiar with the parable in Matthew 25, 10 virgins were waiting for the bridegroom to arrive. Apparently the wait was longer than anticipated and they fell asleep. At midnight there was a cry made for all to awake and join the celebration.
10 virgins woke up, got up and began trimming the wicks on their oil lamps.
5 virgins lit their lamps and were able to attend the wedding, entering in the door.
5 virgins found their lamps were empty and couldn't light the wicks.
The latter 5 asked those with oil to share their oil. The answer was no, for fear there wouldn't be enough for any of them if the oil was divided. They did have a solution. "Go to where the oil is sold. Buy some oil for yourself and meet us." This sound, specific advice lends me to believe this is what they had done. They knew there was plenty of oil. Where to get it. How to get it. That is was possible to get it. You just had to get it for yourself. And you need to do this before a crisis.
The Bible calls these virgins wise and foolish. We can be sure they were holy, chaste, pure (as they were virgins) so we can conclude they were Christians. They were THERE where the bridegroom was to be. They KNEW about the wedding ceremony. They had LAMPS and OIL.
The problem arose when they NEEDED OIL. They hadn't prepared. They weren't FULL of oil. They made a foolish decision.
As I prayed about this scripture, I felt impressed by the Holy Ghost that many are in church, know church, know scripture, even have the Holy Ghost .... but are not FULL OF THE HOLY GHOST.
We won't even realize it until we find our self in need.
We make a decision every day to be wise or be foolish.
I pray to be wise in 2020. To be full so that when I am found to need light, i will not have to search or beg, but I can trim my wick and enter the door.
Those wise virgins couldn't help the foolish ones. No matter how much I love someone, I cannot make them go to the one who sells oil. I cannot make them spiritual, godly or sanctified. All I can do is prepare myself. We have spent a lot of time sharing oil with those who just simply are foolish. It is not God's will for us to spend all our time sharing until we become "dry". I cannot lose my own soul.
I am encouraged that I CAN BE WISE. I can be prepared. No one can give me oil or share their oil or share their lamp with me ... God has oil enough for me and I CAN BE PREPARED for whatever comes my way in 2020.
Fill up, friends, the Bridegroom cometh!
