When God Says “No”
Over the years, we’ve learned that when God says “no,” it’s not rejection—it’s redirection. He knows better than we do, and His “no” is always merciful, even when it hurts. (Romans 8:28; Jeremiah 29:11)
For two years, we lived and ministered in a Church of Scotland building in Kincorth, working hard to raise funds with the hope of purchasing it when it went up for sale. We were promised first consideration (practically a done deal), so when the time came, we were shocked to learn—without any communication—that the building had been sold to someone else. It felt like a heavy blow after so much prayer and preparation. But God said, “no.”
We moved temporarily into another church’s west wing, grateful but urgently searching for a permanent space. After weeks of looking, we found Pavilion 3 in Westhill—spacious, well-kept, and within our budget. We prayed, made an offer, and began planning for the move. Through a Facebook inquiry about chairs, we even connected with a man named Darren, who helps churches find buildings. He had nothing available at the time, but encouraged us to seek out empty commercial buildings and speak with landlords about occupying them. We wanted to own a building and continued with Pavilion 3. But unexpectedly, Pavilion 3 was sold to another group. Another “no.”
What we didn’t realize was that God was setting the stage for something far better. Weeks later, the new owners of Pavilion 3 offered to let us use the space temporarily for free while they renovated. One morning, I felt uneasy about the process, so I called Darren for counsel. That call revealed that the men representing Pavilion 3 were not forthcoming and their offer had too many risks. Yet, by chance, Darren told us he had been praying with his church the night before about a building in Aberdeen that recently became vacant. He felt led to offer us Pavilion 1, a four-story building in Westhill, completely free of charge with no cost in utilities either!
We received the keys this past week!
Looking back, we can see God’s hand in every “no.” Each disappointment positioned us exactly where He wanted us to be. His plans were better than ours all along. When God closes one door, it’s not to leave us outside—it’s to lead us to the right one.
Pray with us regarding this next step for ODBC!
