In the 18th verse of the last chapter of his gospel, Matthew recorded the words of our Lord and Savior: “18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” This single verse seems to be a sticking point for many. They cannot come to terms with having a “LORD” in their lives that has ALL authority. Many things that Jesus spoke are commands – not merely suggestions. With His authority comes power. We must not seek any other power. We must challenge all other power. We must believe in His power, rest in it, and obey His commands. Now, go and make disciples. AMEN! In the 3rd chapter of Paul’s epistle to the Colossians, he writes to them about the character of the new man and how to put Christ above carnality. In verse 15 he wrote: “15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.” There is a lot in this single verse. The rule of the peace of God means that peace should characterize the community of God’s people, and that peace is a standard for discerning God’s will. Paul says to let it rule – let peace arbitrate. May the peace of Christ judge, decide, and govern in our hearts. Whenever there is a doubtful issue, always choose the things that make for peace. Sometimes that will be for ourselves and sometimes that will be for others. Peace must always rule in the church, which is the body, and we must always be thankful for the peace of God within. AMEN! Today being the last Lord’s Day of the month, and a 5th Sunday, we will have a fellowship potluck meal following services and a guest speaker. In his short 2nd epistle, the Elder John wrote about many deceivers who did not confess Jesus as coming in the flesh. He warned of losing things that had been worked for. In verse 9 he wrote: “9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.” Many today deny Jesus just as those did then. To deny Jesus is a rejection of both the Father and the Son. People transgress – go beyond a boundary. We must never go beyond the teachings of Jesus, who He is and what He has done for us. We must “abide” (follow, obey and comply) with the doctrine of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. AMEN! In the first chapters of the Revelation of Jesus Christ, our Lord greeted the seven churches. In Revelation chapter 3, verse 14, He began His address to the church at Laodicea (the lukewarm church) and said: "14 And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, ‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God:". Jesus made it very clear to them here in verse 14 who He is. We must always be aware of this as well. Jesus is the Amen – the “so be it”, the “it is done.” He is the Faithful and True Witness – which was a contrast to the Laodiceans who will be shown to be neither faithful nor true. He is the Beginning of the creation of God – the ruler, source, and origin of all creation. He is first in prominence, not first in sequence. We can be assured that Jesus Christ is the personification and the affirmation of the truth of God. AMEN! Our monthly drive-thru food pantry is this Saturday, August 15th, from 9:00 AM till Noon (or until the food runs out). Please share with those that might need some extra food.
