As we come to the end of the book of Ruth, we should pay attention to what’s going on - a marriage. Not just any marriage, but rather a kinsman-redeemer marriage. Never heard of that? It’s one of the numerous “approved” forms of marriage in Scripture. When we simplify marriage down to a soundbite or a quick and tidy statement of certitude, we miss out on a host of questions and only see things from our own lens, rather than seeing a wider range. The passage comes from Ruth 4.

Based on Ruth 4:1-22 This Sunday will close out the book of Ruth and her story.  For as difficult as the start of the book was, there is a happy ending for Ruth.  Ruth’s story is a story of much of humanity – a story filled with hardship and joy.  A story of survival.  A story of adaptat...

Pastor Matthew had the opportunity to preach and give an update on the health ministries to Derry Presbyterian Church, one of Christ Lutheran Church’s Mission Partners. Pastor Matthew preached on Matthew 25:31-46 and challenged people to hear the story differently - not hearing it as a passage in which we can be proud we pass or are anxious because we fail, but rather, hearing how we ourselves are hungry, thirsty, naked, a stranger, sick, or imprisoned. You can read the manuscript at the link below.

In Ruth 2 we hear about Ruth gleaning in the field. And Boaz goes beyond the requirements of the law. Gleaning isn't just a way to provide for the poor and marginalized. Gleaning also raises a question as to why there are poor among the community in the first place and what are we called to do in light of that reality. The sermon is in response to Ruth 2:1-23
