Psalm 51:1b (NASB)
"Blotting Out"
May 18, 2026
1 According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.
I remember the days when we didn't have the conveniences of computer technology, digital media, and desktop publishing that we have today. We would sit at our desks and type out our sermons, papers, etcetera. If there was an instance where we would make a mistake, which was rare (😊), we would either have to start over, or try to erase the mistake.
And then something wonderful happened. A product called "liquid paper" (wite out) was invented by Bette Nesmith Graham. It allowed the typist to use a liquid to blot out mistakes made during the typing process. When used, it made it seem as though the mistake was never there!
Although the psalmist David may not have had the same invention as liquid paper, he had the same idea from a better inventor, whose name happened to be Almighty God. David says: "According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions".
The Hebrew word for blot out, מחה, means to wipe clean, to wipe out, to annihilate. It means to remove something as if it never happened! David understood that through God's great compassion, He could remove the transgressions of his past as if they had never happened.
That's also what salvation does for the convert. When we accept Jesus as our savior, He blots out our sin, through the atoning sacrifice of His blood. He blots out our sin, as if it never happened!
I challenge you today to reflect on your past. Think about all that you've been through and how the atoning blood of Christ blotted out your sin. As you reflect, rejoice in the reality of Jesus' blood that covers the multitude of sin! He's still in the white out business!
Prayer: Father, thank You for loving me so much that You blotted out my sin. May I rejoice in that reality, knowing that nothing but the blood of Jesus can wash away my sin.
I love You Lord. Amen.
