Market Square Presbyterian Church

Market Square Presbyterian Church Everyone is welcome regardless of race, class, national origin, sexual identity or worldly condition. Our commitment to service is central to who we are.

FAITH • COMMUNITY • COMPASSION • JUSTICE • SERVICE

Since its founding in 1794, Market Square Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) has been a vital presence in the heart of downtown Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. For more than 160 years, our congregation has worshiped in our historic sanctuary, a sacred space where tradition and transformation meet. Market Square is a vibrant and inclusive community of faith co

mmitted to proclaiming and living the Good News of Jesus Christ. We welcome friend and stranger alike—regardless of race, class, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any worldly condition—into the full life of our church. Our mission calls us to celebrate the unique gifts of each person, work for justice, peace, and environmental sustainability, reach out in mission, and witness to God’s transforming love in all we do. While we cherish our rich heritage of traditional worship—anchored by thought-provoking sermons and outstanding music—we also embrace fresh expressions of Christian faith and practice. Worship at Market Square is both reverent and relevant, honoring the sacred while speaking powerfully to the present. Market Square is known for its ministries with unhoused individuals, advocacy for refugees and immigrants, and peacemaking and social justice efforts. We proudly affirm and support the LGBTQ+ community, care for creation through environmental initiatives, and provide space for a wide range of community groups. In all things, we seek to be a church where love leads, justice grows, and all are truly welcome. No matter who you are or where you are on your faith journey, you will find a place of belonging at Market Square Presbyterian Church. WORSHIP ON SUNDAYS

On Sunday Market Square celebrated the sacraments of communion and baptism, both evidencing the joy and thanksgiving of a celebration of community, fellowship and life of the church. Through the sacrament of baptism and with his parents Rev. Allison and Conrad, the congregation welcomed James Smith into Christ’s church, “to share with us in his ministry, for we are all one in Christ.” We are thrilled to welcome James into the fellowship of believers!

At Market Square Presbyterian Church, our commitment to Faith & Justice comes to life through ministries that seek to build a more compassionate, equitable, and peaceful world. The Anti-Racism & Racial Justice Task Force, Ecology Action Committee, LGBTQ+ & Allies Committee, and Peacemaking Committee provide meaningful opportunities to learn, advocate, serve, and take action on issues that affect our neighbors and communities.

You do not need to be a member of our church to participate—we welcome anyone who is looking for ways to make a positive impact in an often-divisive world. Together, we seek to put our faith into action and work toward a future marked by justice, dignity, and hope for all. 🫶 🌈 ☮️ 🍃

EARTH WISDOM: COMPOSTING, A WISE PRACTICE

In the United States, food is the most common material sent to landfills, comprising about 24% of solid municipal waste. Trapped under layers of garbage, these food scraps and yard waste materials not only release massive amounts of pollutants, such as methane, they also become unavailable where they are needed most, back in the soil. Composting, rather than trashing food waste, transforms squandered food and yard waste into a useful resource through decomposition. It provides an ideal environment for bacteria, fungi, and worms to break down nitrogen-rich materials such as “greens”(grass clippings, plants) and carbon-rich “browns” (dried leaves, twigs, paper). Some people refer to this end-product as “black gold” amended soil, full of healthy nutrients for plants and people.

Other benefits for our planet: 1. Promotes carbon sequestration. 2. Reduces waste to landfills. 3. Soil structure retains water better 4. Helps to prevent erosion. All wise reasons to compost…and It is FREE!

Thank you to the Ecology Action Committee of Market Square Presbyterian Church for keeping us informed 💕 🤗 🍁 🐛

After years of faithful service, the parlor carpet has been informed that its retirement is pending (can we get an "Amen"?). While we tackle some of the room's most "well-loved" features, our Facilities and Bridge Operations Managers Sean and Dave have rolled up their sleeves and picked up paint rollers.

We can't confirm whether more paint ended up on the walls than on the painters, but the room is already looking brighter. Thanks, guys!

This Sunday, June 7, at 11 a.m., we will celebrate both sacraments of the Presbyterian Church: holy baptism and the Lord's Supper. We will welcome James, child of Rev. Allison Smith, into the covenant community through the waters of baptism, and then gather together at our open table for communion. All are welcome. Join Revs. Stan Jenkins, Allison Smith, Ki Nam Lee, and Sandy Strauss this coming Sunday morning at Market Square Presbyterian Church.

At Market Square Presbyterian Church, we believe every person is created in the image of God and worthy of love, dignity, and belonging.

As we observe Pride Month, we celebrate the gifts, faith, and contributions of our LGBTQIA+ siblings and reaffirm our commitment to being a welcoming and inclusive community.

No matter who you are, whom you love, where you've been, or where you are on your faith journey, you are welcome here. There is a place for you in worship, fellowship, service, and leadership.

God's love is for everyone—and so is this church.

Happy Pride Month! 🌈

For the Beauty of the Earth ✨
We've been soaking in some truly gorgeous weather lately — and we can't help but feel grateful. Sunshine, blooming trees, gentle breezes... creation is singing, and we're joining the chorus.
"For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies..."
Come worship with us this Sunday and bring your gratitude for all of it. 🌿☀️

The Call to Worship

This element of worship marks and sets apart a time that is different than other time. It calls the “real world” to focus on and pay attention to one’s relationship with God.

“What’s important,” said the Rev. Dr. David Gambrell, “is that we understand it is God who invites us to worship. Everything begins with God’s initiative; it isn’t us who calls. God comes to us in the world, in Jesus Christ and in the Holy Spirit.”

A blessing for students and teachers at the end of a school year from Rev. Allison:

"As this season folds closed, may you carry the goodness of what you've done and what you've learned; may you release and leave behind all that no longer serves you; may grace, wisdom, and peace guide you toward the new season that now has room to unfold."
