We grieve the violence that has taken place at the Islamic Center of San Diego. In moments like these, our hearts turn first toward our Muslim neighbors, who deserve to gather in prayer, peace, and safety without fear. An act of violence against a faith community wounds not only those directly impacted, but the wider fabric of our shared life together.
As followers of Christ, we affirm the sacred dignity of every person and reject hatred, fear, and violence in all its forms. We are reminded that our call is not simply to condemn violence, but to embody love of neighbor in tangible ways: through presence, solidarity, prayer, and the protection of one another’s humanity.
We hold the affected community, its leaders, families, and all those carrying fear or grief in our prayers. We also give thanks for first responders, caregivers, and community leaders working to bring safety, healing, and peace.
In a time when division and suspicion can so easily take root, may we instead choose the harder and holier path of compassion, relationship, and mutual care. Our Muslim neighbors are not strangers to us. They are part of the shared community we are called to love and protect together.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” — Matthew 5:9
May God bring comfort to the grieving, protection to the vulnerable, and courage to all who seek peace.
